Mission-Charlo wrestlers shine in Ronan

RONAN — “We’re still in the tournament, and that’s what matters,” Mission-Charlo coach Lyle Cronk told his huddled team after a close dual loss to Corvallis in Friday’s pool play of the Western Montana Duals at Ronan High School.

The Bulldogs were, but Cronk speculated that the team didn’t take it to heart until early the next day, when Swiss exchange student and first-year wrestler Manuel Ammann was flat on his back against top seed Columbia Falls’ Cody Walters.

“We were getting shut out in that match, and he fought off his back in and only ended up losing 10-6,” Cronk narrated. “That gave us a spark right there, for the guys to see someone who’s new to the sport fight like that.”

Mission-Charlo rallied to wrestle better against Class B rival Eureka and finally take down Polson in the seventh-place matchup.

Another youngster, freshman Trent Dennison, gave the Bulldogs a boost in that match, battling to a 20-10 loss to the Pirates’ Jared Young that was closer than the score indicated. Dennison’s effort gave the Bulldogs the momentum they needed: Kyle Couture, Ammann and Jacen Petersen ripped off three striaght pins en route to a 43-37 Mission-Charlo victory.

Polson coach Bob Owen also took a lot out of Young’s victory over Dennison. He was excited to see Young, a senior, so eager to get better.

“Jared really showed improvement this week,” Owen said. “I think he had his best weekend of wrestling. … It’s huge for the underclassmen to see that.”

The Pirates were handicapped by a shoulder injury to sophomore Warren Wood. They lost close duals to Glacier and Libby to end up in that seventh-place match with Mission-Charlo.

“That hurt us, especially in that dual with Libby. I think we could have won that with Warren in the lineup,” said Owen. “...That dual with Glacier was pretty good. I like the way they [Polson] competed.”

Owen cited Steven Bravo’s pin over Mike Corrigan as the backbreaker, but he said the Bulldogs deserved to win.

“I give them credit,” he said. “They wrestled pretty hard in that thing.”

Along with Young, the Pirates got strong efforts over the weekend from Tel Motichka and Tele Seemann. Seemann got a key pin to lock in a win over Fairfield on Friday. Any other result in that bout would have kept the Pirates out of the championship bracket.

“I told him if he didn’t win that match, he was walking home,” Polson assistant coach Bill Owen joked.

Tournament host Ronan wrestled well on Friday, beating Thompson Falls and Deer Lodge, but a loss to Libby kept the Chiefs out of Saturday’s championship bracket. The Chiefs were led by Connor Benn and Ronnie Cullis over the weekend.

Arlee, which competed only in mixer matches over the two days, saw all five wrestlers—T.J. Knoll, Harold Yocum, Alex Bertollt, Ty Adams and Daniel Dunlop—collect pins.

Columbia Falls defeated Corvallis in the championship match on Saturday. Glacier took down Frenchtown for third, and Eureka topped Libby to take home fifth place.
