Polson graduate killed in Idaho accident

KOOSKIA, Id. – A 2010 Polson High School graduate and her 2-year-old son died July 2 when the car they rode in drove off a bridge and into an Idaho river.

Talia D. Rushing, 22, and her son Layton Hallmark, 2, were passengers in a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Layton’s father, Boone Hallmark, 29, of Boise, according to the Idaho State Police.

Hallmark was driving east near milepost 97 on Idaho’s U.S. Highway 12 east of Kooskia at about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday when he fell asleep and drove off the south edge of the highway and into the Lochsa River.

The car sank the river and rescuers saved Hallmark and transported him to Syringa Hospital in Grangeville.

Because of harsh river conditions, Rushing and Layton Hallmark were not immediately recovered.

Boone Hallmark reportedly was trying to free the woman and child when he was swept out of the car by the river, according to the ISP.

Idaho State Police said no criminal charges were filed.

Funeral services for Talia and Layton are 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 15, at the New Life Christian Center, 1414 2nd Street in Polson. Burial will follow services at Lakeview Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
