Vikings four-peat as state champs

GREAT FALLS – Charlo’s boys thought they had lost; they had a chance for four and had let it slip away.

“I think it was one of the Belt kids that came up and shook one of the kids’ hands and told them congratulations,” Charlo coach Bret Thompson recalled.

The scoring in the 200-meter dash had been delayed so meet officials could look over the replay. Tyler Delaney had finished fourth, putting the Vikings one-and-a-half points in front of second-place Belt for a fourth straight boys’ Class C state championship, but the athletes down on the field didn’t know that.

“They really thought that we hadn’t won coming down to the end of the track meet,” Thompson said. “They were pretty excited when they found out.”

It was a meet in which nothing seemed to go as planned.

Belt thrower Hunter Croff, the favorite in the javelin, scratched on all three attempts.

Awhile later, Charlo’s division champion hurdler Kail Pope fell in the high hurdles.

Delaney and his brother, Michael, both scored points in the sprint events.

“We weren’t supposed to be scoring in the 100 and 200 with the Delaneys,” Thompson said, referring to the brothers’ seed times. “It was a lot of little things.”

None of those little things were bigger than Dalton Delaney’s fifth place in the two-mile. The junior bested his seed time by more than 20 seconds.

“We win by a point and a half and he got us two points,” Thompson said. “I guess you can get a little closer, but not much closer.”

There was also the help from the usual suspects.

Both boys’ relays were second.

Tyler Delaney placed in the 100, 200 and 400.

Pope, fighting through injury, was fifth in the 300 hurdles. Michael Delaney placed fourth.

Jacen Petersen was second for another year in the pole vault and third in the javelin, early points that Thompson said were immeasurable.

“He was busy,” the coach said. “That was Friday morning and he had the javelin, the pole vault and the short relay preliminaries.”

Thompson sung the praises of his group of four seniors—Petersen, Pope, Tyler Delaney and Connor Daugherty—who were a part of all four championship teams.

“They’ve been a part of it from the first time we won the first one,” Thompson said, noting that the group was the core of the Vikings’ continued success.

The coach also reminded that it doesn’t end with them.

“I have a shot putter [Dugan Runkel] and I have Michael [Delaney] who was in five events,” Thompson said. “Jesse Long was in the hurdles.”

In addition to losing his seniors, Thompson said he is sad to lose an integral coach as well. Jared Miller, an assistant the past few seasons, is taking a job in Missoula and will be sorely missed, Thompson said.

Charlo’s girls also had a solid showing, placing seventh in Great Falls.

That effort was led by a third-place long relay that ran the same at the Western C divisional meet a week prior. The Vikings’ 400-meter relay was fourth.

Jordan Ludeman placed second in the pole vault.

Aspen Runkel placed fourth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 to cap off a stellar senior season. Runkel was also eighth in the 200. Teammate Sienna Brown finished 10th.

Arlee’s girls placed 22nd behind a third-place finish in the 800 from Jessica Knoll.

Alex Adams narrowly missed the podium in the pole vault for the Scarlets, placing seventh. The Scarlets’ short relay finished sixth. Whitney Malatare was 14th in the long jump.

Isaac Desjarlais was the Warriors’ only state qualifier. The sophomore finished seventh in the 100-meter dash.

Two Eagle River’s Kamiah Payne placed third in the state in the long jump, jumping 20 feet even.
