Mission Valley ropers shine at state

KALISPELL — Five Mission Valley rodeo standouts earned spots in next month’s National High School Rodeo Finals at the state high school rodeo last weekend.

Abby Knight, Will Powell, Wyatt Lytton, Trevar McAllister and Nichole Lake all qualified for the national rodeo, starting July 13 in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Knight, of Charlo, finished second in the short go on Championship Sunday at the Montana High School Rodeo Finals at Majestic Valley Arena in Kalispell. Knight’s time in pole bending was 20.96.

Knight finished fourth in the year-end standings in that event. The top four from this event earn spots in the national finals.

Lytton, of Polson, and his partner Carson King of Dillon tied for first in the year-end standings in team roping. They finished sixth during Sunday’s performance.

Lake, also of Polson, finished second in the year-end standings in breakaway roping. She had the ninth best time in the short go on the final day.

McAllister, of Ronan, placed third in the year-end bareback standings.

Powell, of St. Ignatius, was second in the steer wrestling in the season standings. He and King tied for the finals championship, each posting a time of 4.36 seconds.
