St. Ignatius police chief resigns

ST. IGNATIUS – Mission residents, torn by the need for stable law enforcement services but limited by budgeting concerns, are split over the June 3 resignation of Chief Jeff Ferguson.

“Over the years I have formed relationships with the previous officers and the major complaint is low pay and significant hours that are basically unpaid,” said a Mission resident who asked for anonymity. “Our community does not support the officers working for our city very well.”

She pointed out the lack of support for Ferguson when a dog destroyed his uniform and city officials refused to reimburse him.

Ferguson, whose last day is June 20, served 15 months.

“As always, our community is so no confrontational and that is why nothing changes,” said the Mission resident. “No one demands accountability and equal treatment. They are afraid to rock the boat.”

Ferguson resigned after council members voted unanimously to search for a new chief during an open meeting.
