At St. Regis, a trio of Mission Valley Class C volleyball teams played a combined ten games at the District 10C tournament held at St. Regis this past weekend. Charlo (13-3) drew a first round bye on account of being the top-seeded team.

Arlee (8-7) entered as the 4th-seed, while Two Eagle River (0-12) slid in at the number 7 slot. The top two teams earn an automatic berth at the Western C Divisional in Butte next weekend, while the third place 10C team competes in a play-in to qualify for competition.

The Lady Vikings overcame their bout of semifinal hiccups to take the 2nd championship from the host Lady Tigers behind a strong team effort and some solid defensive stances. Charlo (17-4) advances to the Western C Tournament at Butte this weekend and will face the winner of the 5th place District 9/10 vs 4th place District 8 matchup.

Like an athletic parody of stanzas extrapolated from a Katy Perry rendition of the pop tune “Roar,” the Lady Vikings got back up after being held down in their preceding meeting. They had looked into the eye of the Tigers, which spurred them to action as fighters and this time St. Regis heard Charlo roar as they played like champions.

Two Eagle has played Hot Springs tough in their two regular scheduled games, playing a combined nine sets, six of which were into the 20s, a quartet of which extended into extras. The Lady Eagles had prevailed over the Lady Savage Heat in some tournament format games at the Mineral County Invitational held midseason, but couldn’t quite gain the necessary edge during those games of record during the regular schedule. That all changed in this third meeting in which the Lady Eagles tallied their highest number of spikes and aces all season.

DISTRICT 6B

TOURNAMENT

At Florence, both the regular season 3rd-place Ronan Maidens and the 4th-place Mission Lady Bulldogs of St. Ignatius competed at the District 6B tournament to sort out seeding for the upcoming Western B Divisional being hosted by Ronan this upcoming weekend of November 7-8. But in order to qualify for a 1st round game, St. Ignatius had to compete in a play-in match against 5th-place Deer Lodge.

(4th place) 6B Mission Lady Bulldogs (4-13)

Mission 3,

Deer Lodge 2

The 6B loser out play-in game was a five set back-and-forth battle with the Mission Lady Bulldogs gaining an initial two set advantage before the third set was pushed into extras, the Lady Wardens staving off elimination. The fourth set was also played tight, with Deer Lodge once again holding off the bite of the Dawgs to tie sets at two apiece and force a fifth and final determining set for all the marbles. The Lady Bulldogs were able to recapture the momentum from their first two sets and thereby ended the season for Deer Lodge 3-2.

Florence 3,

Mission 0

The reward for the victor of the play-in match? Face the top-seeded (soon-to-be 17-1) Florence Lady Falcons whose only loss on the season was to Loyola and recently swept Class A contender Frenchtown in straight sets.

Mission 3, Ronan 0

The loss slipped Mission into the consolation championship on a collision course for a rematch rumble for round three with Ronan.

The Maidens had bested Mission the week before 3-1, but the Lady Bulldogs had pushed the other three games into the 20s even thought they had come out on the short end.

6B 3rd-seed St. Ignatius (6-14) will faced 7B 2nd-seed Eureka at the Western B Divisional in Ronan this weekend.

(3rd place) 6B Ronan Maidens (6-10)

Loyola 3, Ronan 0

At Florence in an opening round semifinal matchup between 3rd-place Ronan and 2nd-place Missoula Loyola Sacred Heart (15-1), the Breakers had their hands full in the first set when both teams forayed into the 20s, but Loyola was able to gain the edge and prevail. Thereafter, the Maidens battled their way into the teens, but couldn’t close the gap any closer as they were swept in straight sets 3-0.

St. Ignatius 3, Ronan 0

In the District 6B consolation championship, Ronan and St. Ignatius would meet for the third time this season. Just the week prior, the Maidens had won a road rumble against the Lady Bulldogs 3-1, only this time Mission flipped the script in straight sets 3-0.

Ronan (6-12) will take the 6B 4th-seed into the Western B Divisional, where they will tangle with the 7B 1st-seed Thompson Falls Lady Bluehawks. Ronan has played Thompson Falls twice during the regular schedule, dropping the home contest 3-1 and the road match 3-2 with all games stretching into the 20s with the exception of the fifth set.

At Polson on Senior Night this past Thursday, the host Lady Pirates had three players tally double figures in kills while Jaiden Toth dished out four dozen assists along with scooping out two dozen digs (24) as Polson clipped the wings of the visiting Lady Yellowjackets in a nonconference matchup.

Gusts from the windup of Haley “The Hurricane” Fyant’s 20 kills at times blew at category 4 gale force, while Nicole “Own the Net” Lake and Toth supplemented the carnage with 11 apiece.

Polson more than doubled up Stevensville in total number of spikes.

“There was a lot of emotion, but my seniors played a great match,” said Polson coach Jan Toth. “It was fun to watch, for them to be able to play the game, laugh, be comfortable and be very competitive.”

The team’s seven seniors were honored before the tipoff of their last home game and played most of the way. Those seniors include a trio of Taylors in Taylor “Bring It On” Brackey, Taylor “Digs It All” Davis as well as Taylor “Run This Court” Rost along with another quartet that includes Libby “Can Ya Dig It” Clay, Skyla “Come At Me” Krantz, Sarah “Savin it” Rausch and Jaiden “Just Do It” Toth.
