Bonanza Bucs bag bracket bronze
This past Friday and Saturday in Missoula, area volleyball teams competed against one another at the annual Missoula County Volleyball Invitational held at both Hellgate as well as Sentinel high schools.
All five NWA teams were represented as well as ten Western AA teams along with lone SWA representative Anaconda.
Polson played in the Sentinel Pool, where they split their pair of games with two of those AA teams in pool play along with NWA Libby, but battled into the teens in a half dozen of their losses.
The top four records in pool play get assigned to the championship bracket, while the lower quartet records from each pool were assigned to the consolation bracket.
With the exception of Columbia Falls, all remaining A teams were routed to the Saturday consolation bracket to compete for hardware.
In their first round, the Lady Pirates lost the first set to AA Big Sky, battled back to tie matters up at one apiece, then prevailed in the third and final set to advance.
Polson was stampeded by the Lady Bison of Great Falls, although they pushed both sets into the teens.
Relegated to the consolation round, the Lady Pirates faced the Lady Rustlers of C.M. Russell from Great Falls.
After dropping the opening set, Polson battled back again to tie the match at one apiece, then captured the third set to put them into the round for 3rd place hardware.
The Lady Pirates would face a familiar foe in the Lady Eagles from Big Sky, whom they had squeezed by in the first round.
Polson would sweep both sets to capture 3rd place bronze.
Both head coach Jan Toth and assistant coach Patty Luetzen were effusive about the quality of play exhibited by their players.
Toth commented that they “played like champions,” rallying their opponents which included not a few tangles with talls of the six foot variety.
She elaborated further by saying that “[the] whole team worked hard collectively …we had multiple hitters shine and our defense was the best there was at the tourney.” Assistant coach Luetzen reiterated the latter comment in mentioning that she has seldom witnessed a defensive stance such as the Lady Pirates exhibited during their bracket play competition.
Haley Fyant led the spikers with a whopping two day collective total of 65 kills, with Taylor Brackey, Lauren Lefthand, Chadelle Smith and Jaiden Toth turning in multiple dozens as well.
Toth contributed a finger numbing 163 set assists over the course of two dozen games, which may explain why her fingerprints may lack much ridge detail for a few days to come.
At the defensive end of the spectrum, the Lady Pirate defenders scooped up an astounding 347 digs over the course of those same two dozen games.
Polson features a quintet of Lady Pirates among the TOP TEN of the NWA Conference for digs with Toth, Libby Clay, Taylor Davis, Sarah Rausch and Lydia Dupuis all listed among the top seven.
Polson (1-3, 3-4) will have traveled to Frenchtown this past Tuesday, then host the Whitefish Lady Bulldogs this Thursday.
