Crucial cross-county conference clash
Ronan 3, St. Ignatius 0
At St. Ignatius this past Thursday, the visiting Maidens and the host Mission Lady Bulldogs engaged in a crucial cross county clash with 6B conference standing ramifications. In their first meeting early into the season, Mission flipped the script 3-1 on the favored Ronan home court advantage by the scores of 25-21, 10-25, 25-21, 25-20.
This time around, the Maidens came better prepared to engage their opponent on foreign turf and dictated the tempo in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead. In the third set, the host Lady Bulldogs made some adjustments that tightened up the preceding scoring disparity, pushing the game into extras. But the Maidens were able to execute some crucial plays to wiggle off the hook and ultimately prevailed in the third set to complete a set sweep and capture the overall match.
The win evened the series between the two teams as well as evened their conference records, setting the stage for the final conference game on the regular schedule for both teams with those outcomes to determine stratification in the 6B standings.
The visiting Maidens were led by seniors Sydnee Clairmont and Kendra Starkel, who both tallied 11 kills apiece. Jordyn Clairmont and Shaina Snyder split the table setting duties with Clairmont setting a baker’s version and Snyder an ordinary dozen. Ashley Peterson and McKenzie Cates collaborated on 7 of the 10 blocks for the Maidens.
The host Lady Bulldogs were paced by Lindsay Johnson and Sydney Castor, who collaborated on 9 kills and two dozen digs, while Jordyn Eichert set their table as well as pitched in eight digs of her own.
St. Ignatius (2-5, 4-11) has a pair of games remaining on their slate with a conference finale against league leading Florence. Ronan (2-5, 5-10) traveled on Saturday to close out their regular schedule against occupants on the lower rung of the league ladder incarcerated at Deer Lodge.

At St. Ignatius this past Saturday, the visiting 6B Lady Falcons dominated the host Lady Bulldogs much in the same fashion as they have many of their opponents this season, dictating the tempo of the game while executing fundamentals with finesse. Lindsay Johnson spiked half of the Mission team kills as well as contributed 9 digs, while Jordyn Eichert served up a pair of aces as well as set the table for all of the team assists.
The loss in conjunction with a Ronan Maiden win over their final conference opponent dropped the Lady Bulldogs (2-6, 4-13) a slot in the standings. The 4th place finish sets up a play-in game against 5th place Deer Lodge this Thursday in Florence with the winner advancing to compete in the District 6B Tournament at Florence this weekend.

At St. Ignatius this past Friday, the host Lady Bulldogs had intended to teather the talons of the visiting 7B Lady Bluehawks, but it was the visitors who ended up putting a muzzle around the bite of the host team in straight sets.
Mission defense held the edge as they both out blocked and outdug their visitors. But the Lady Bluehawks more than doubled up the numbers in the offensive categories to outpoint their hosts by a similar margin.

The Polson Lady Pirates split their matches against a tough pair of volleyball teams on their schedule this past week. Both the NWA conference crown Columbia Falls WildKats and the SWA Dillon Lady Beavers were the only teams to hang a loss on the defending State A champion Corvallis Lady Blue Devils this season.
Polson 3,
Dillon 2
At Polson, a volleyball slugfest ensued when the host Lady Pirates and the visiting Lady Beavers went at one another on the volleyball court last Saturday. Both teams flung rocket propelled spikes across the net that at times either ricocheted off the floor or applied a different sort of “facial” compound to the skin of a defender attempting to dig one of them out. At the service line, each team sent sizzling serves across the net that at times seemed to explode upon contact. All this high velocity offense combined for over a hundred kills and almost two dozen aces by both teams together. Yet the defense on either side of the net was up to the task of digging out some of the most difficult hits that have been witnessed this season. For the Lady Beavers, Taylor Chase and Cierra Lamey provided most of the fireworks. On the Lady Pirate side of the net, the jump serving of Haley Fyant and the low hummers served by Jaiden Toth that left about as much room as they cleared the net as an eye of a needle leaves space for a piece of thread helped spark the Polson offense with some oohs and aahhs from the crowd in attendance. Haley “the Hurricane” demonstrated why she acquired her nickname by spiking a couple of shots at Lady Beaver defenders that almost left vapor trails like a jet liner streaking across the sky on account of them being hit so hard that the sound of their impact reverberated after contact.
Key to this game was the stellar defense by the dynamic diggin dynamoes of the Lady Pirate defenders. Polson has a quintet of players ranked among the TOP 10 of the conference for digs. Prior to this game, a quartet of them had over 100 digs for the season that included seniors Jaiden Toth, Libby Clay, Sarah Rausch and Taylor Davis. Their fifth member, Lydia Dupuis, crested the century plateau midway through this game to give Polson their fifth member with over 100 digs on the season with a handful of games yet to be played in the season. Fyant joins the century club for kills tallies, while Toth is approaching the half century mark for service aces.
Polson (2-5, 5-6) will host Stevensville this Thursday the last day of October on Senior Night, then travels to Libby on Saturday for the regular schedule finale.

Then there are the quintet of seasoned seniors with the tallest of them stretching the net in 5-11 Winter Kemppainien.
Despite having to play in the shadows cast by several of these skyscrapers, the Lady Pirates battled valiantly. Haley Fyant led Polson with 10 kills, while Libby Clay and Lydia Dupuis scooped up 10 digs each.
