Mission wins a real 'Dawg fight

RONAN – The visiting Lady Bulldogs of St. Ignatius pulled off an unexpected victory over the host Ronan Maidens 3-1 in the first cross county conference clash of the season, 25-21, 10-25, 25-21, 25-20.

A towering Maiden lineup features a quartet of players 5-10 or better, a distinct height advantage which gravitates toward more sizzle in spikes. But the Lady Bulldogs proved to be up to the challenge by digging out Ronan rockets and then rerouting them back the other way over the net. In the first match after a trio of ties, the Lady Bulldogs slowly cobbled together a lead over a slow starting Ronan squad, extending the margin by as much as 19-10 before the Maidens launched their assault. Ronan would force two Mission time outs, closing the gap to 24-21 before the Lady Bulldogs closed out the match. In the second set, Ronan roared out in front after a quartet of ties, the final one coming at 9 apiece before the Maidens put the match away to even the games at 1-1.

In the third match, Ronan continued to build on their momentum that carried over from the previous game, twice building a burgeoning bulge over the Bulldogs of a half dozen 17-13, 19-13. But while the onslaught bent the Bulldogs, they did not break as they continued to dig out Ronan rockets, taking the zap out of their zingers to close the gap to within a single point 19-18. In this viewers estimation, this third match is where the outcome of the entire contest would hinge. A subsequent spiking sputter, a line violation, followed by another kill clunker swung the contest from being in favor of the host Maidens over the other way for the visiting Bulldogs. Thereafter, the closest Ronan could come would be within a deuce 20-22 before Mission closed out the match 25-21 for a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was played very tight through the first half with seesaw switchbacks that included six ties, both sides knotted at 11 apiece before Mission started to create some breathing room. Ronan reeled them back in, tying the contest once again at 18 apiece before the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for good and then held off the host team for not only the match 25-20, but the overall contest as well 3-1. The Maidens outperformed Mission in the majority of the statistical categories with the exception of defensive blocking, where the Lady Bulldogs held the edge. A superb defensive effort by the visitors coupled with some strategic foibles by the host Maidens would lend toward their demise. The Lady Bulldogs were paced by senior middle-blocker Lindsay Johnson with 9 spikes, who had accrued only 11 kills over the course of an entire tournament the weekend prior.

Freshman defensive specialist Trinity Lewandowski was a defensive dynamo, dredging up 14 digs, while junior outside-hitter Sydney Castor served up a quartet of aces. Ronan place a trio of spikers in double figures with McKenzie Dulmes tallying 11Ks and both Kendra Starkel and Sydnee Clairmont with 10 apiece. Dani Richwine served up a half dozen aces, while both her and Starkel made 18 digs. St. Ignatius (1-0) gets a jump on the schedule, while Ronan (0-1) is forced to play catchup.

The Ronan Maidens pushed their opponents into extras in half of their games, but couldn’t quite get that extra couple of spikes to drop to tilt either contest in their direction. Senior OH Kendra Starkel had a beastly game against Bigfork with two dozen digs to keep the Maidens in the contest as well as almost as many serves at the service line, drilling 7 aces out of 23 serve attempts. McKenzie Dulmes and Sydnee Clairmont teamed up for a baker’s dozen spikes against Eureka, but the Lady Lions succeeded in wiggling off the hook.
