Soccer: Polson gets Parked; Sting boys win, tie

BOYS

Park 5, Polson1

The Pirates played the Rangers tight through the first half, but fatigue likely took its toll after intermission as Park took control of the game thereafter.  Sophomore striker Mike Mercer launched a zinger at the goal which the Park keeper was able to partially deflect, but strategically positioned freshman Andrew Hanson took advantage of the opportunity to net his first varsity goal with under ten minutes remaining.

The Pirates held the lead in the early going before the Panthers tied the score, then took the lead for good just before intermission.  The Polson goal came off a header tapped into the net by senior Morgan Moll off a free kick from Ben River.   The Pirates have now scored twice as many goals at this juncture of the season as they had last year.   Polson (0-2) travels to Frenchtown Thursday, then tangle toes with Whitefish next Tuesday in their first conference clash.

GIRLS

Polson 1, Park 0

A colloquium of color confusion confounded followers of two teams this weekend as they engaged in a same school song soccer squad skirmish in Livingston.  Athletic events between Park and Polson take on an ironic hue as both share the same color scheme (purple & gold) as well as the same fight song (Wave the Flag).  It would be the purple & gold of Polson who would wave the flag of victory in this rendezvous when a pair of Lady Pirate seasoned seniors connected for the lone goal of the game.  Defender Sophia Sisler was instrumental in orchestrating an effective defensive front.

At Belgrade, the Lady Pirates struck first when freshman Marina Mayorga booted a pass from Sarah Howell into the net, but the host Lady Panthers netted a quick pair within a three minute span to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.  Howell netted the equalizer a dozen minutes into the second half.  The score stayed tied at 2 apiece for almost ten minutes before Belgrade connected with another pair within another three minute span, capping the scoring with a penalty kick to hand Polson a 5-2 loss.  Despite the outcome, coach Michael Hewston was pleased by the overall team performance.  Kiana Snyder saw her first varsity action, attacking the ball well when it infringed within her area.
