Mission Valley All-Stars shine

| April 1, 2015 1:47 PM

In the opening game of the all-star contest featuring basketball players from local area girls teams, the Lights gained traction early and maintained that edge the remainder of the game.  Charlo’s Shayna Nagy led all scorers with 16 points with teammate Aspen Jore of Ronan following close behind with another 15 points and Lady Savage Heat Josey Carr from Hot Springs netting another teen tally of 14 points.  Jore nearly pulled a double-double along with swatting a trio of blocks, a performance that earned her MVP honors for the Light team.

Plains Trotter Hailey Phillips was the only Dark squad player to reach double digits, supplementing her play with a multitude of other stat category contributions to earn her MVP honors for the Dark side.  Arlee Scarlet Morgan Malatare and Polson Lady Pirate Nicole Lake just missed double figures with nine points apiece for the Dark jerseys.

Based upon the level of intensity exhibited by their interaction on the court, the best teammate rivalry tandem would belong to the Nagy sisters from Charlo, who seemed to up the ante a few notches whenever they engaged one another during defensive assignments when the other had possession of the ball.

In the second all-star game featuring skilled basketball players from local area boys teams, the Dark squad held the edge after the first half of play.  Still trailing early into the second half, Two Eagle River’s Eugene Parker converted a deuce and one opportunity to pull the Light team within a point 76-75.  Both teams added a free throw to move the score to 77-76 when Arlee’s Tyler Tanner hit a trey to push the Lights temporarily ahead 77-79.   Regular season Warrior teammate Justis Haynes converted a pair of free throws to even things up at 79 apiece, but thereafter the Light team began to shift the momentum of the game little by little in their favor as they inched ahead of the Darks.   Key factors in the shift in fortunes during the second half were the combined efforts of Haynes and Ronan’s Cedric Earthboy, who collaborated on 34 second half points that benefited from ten second half rebounds from Polson’s Matthew Rensvold and another half dozen from Earthboy.  Haynes would drain a back-to-back triples from beyond the arc to vault the Lights past the century threshold 99-102 and 99-105.  Charlo’s Kobe Cox would score a deuce to nudge the Darks into triple digit territory 101-107.  Mission’s Aaron Fisher-Ahenakew wowed the crowd with a scoring finale stuff to cap the evening.

Ronan’s  Earthboy led all scorers with 26 points, while Mission’s Fisher-Ahenakew and Arlee’s Haynes were the only other all-stars to breach the 20s.   Polson’s Rensvold led all rebounders with at least 15 boards, while Plains Horseman Aaron Baker gathered in at least 11 rebounds for the Dark squad.  Earthboy was selected for MVP honors for the Lights, while Hot Springs Savage Heat guard Trevor Paro won the MVP award for the Dark squad with a display of athletic versatility that included dishing out a couple of impressively executed assists.  On an aside, those in attendance may have recalled the scoreboard reading 115 points at the end of the game, which may have been inaccurately rendered when the scoreboard locked up when the Light squad hit the century mark toward the latter portion of the game.
