Cause:  Lightning

Detected: August 4, 2015

Location:  Approximately 35 miles northeast of Swan Lake, MT 

Legal Description:  Lat. 47° 47.98, Long. 113°04.53

Current size:  43 acres

Jurisdiction: USDA-FS, Northern Region, Flathead National Forest, Spotted Bear Ranger District

 

Latest Update (6 August-14:00):  Strong winds today have had little effect on the fire as they have been accompanied by higher relative humidity.  There has been little fire growth today although smoke and some flame have been reported by lookouts.

 

Current Status:  The fire is burning in very steep, rocky terrain at high elevation in the upper portions of Three Sisters Creek in the Bob Marshall Wilderness.  The Three Sisters Fire is currently on the Flathead National Forest, but is within a half mile of the forest boundary with the Lewis and Clark National Forest and has the potential to move across that boundary.  The fire is being managed to allow natural fire its ecological role in the wilderness, but fire managers will take suppression actions to protect Forest Service administrative sites if they become threatened.   The fire is being monitored by aerial observation flights, Spotted Bear Lookout (Flathead National Forest) and Beartop Lookout (Lewis and Clark National Forest).

 

Resources:  5 Forest Service personnel are being utilized to monitor the fire and provide public information at trailheads.

Closures:  No trail closures are associated with this fire at this time.
