Summer Heat- Pioneer Days basketball players battle it out on the pavement
The annual Pioneer Days 3 on 3 took place in Ronan on a very hot Saturday. Eighty-five teams participated this year, down two from last year. The event featured 13 divisions, a kids slam-dunk contest, and a scholarship presentation.
Two $250 scholarships were presented to Ronan high school graduates who are enrolled to head off to college at the end of the month.
Organizer of the event, Steve Woll said the scholarships were given to students based on citizenship, academics, and athletics. Applicants for the scholarship had to have graduated from Ronan, be enrolled at a college, participated in the tourney, and had to submit an application.
Many local teams competed well at the tournament. For the second week in a row, the Ronan based Desert Horse Starz won a tourney. After winning in Polson, Alicia Camel, Lee Camel, Louetta Conko-Camel and Micalann McCrea came to their home parking lot and beat a Eureka based team to win the Female 11th-Open division.
Many other teams competed in Polson last week as well. The Polson Pirates team of Bo Kelley, Trey Kelley, Trevor Schultz, and Kendal Forman-Webster stepped up their game this week and took third in the boys 7th-8th division.
That’s Whats Up, a Ronan based team that included Elijah Tonasket, Marlo Tonasket, Kellen McClure and Jordan Gaten took second place in their division for the second week in a row.
