Course: “Fire Ecology in the Crown of the Continent” – Aug. 16-26, Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. This class takes place in the wild South Fork Flathead River valley, deep in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Participants backpack into remote field sites and float out of the wilderness in inflatable rafts, working alongside researchers studying fire ecology and fire effects in ponderosa-pine and western-larch forests. Exhibitions: “Hometown: The MMAC Permanent Collection Celebrates Missoula” and “Human Condition: The Art of Ben Steele” – June 4-Sept. 12, Paxson and Meloy galleries, UM Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center. “Hometown” brings together images of the Garden City by artists who have called Missoula home. “Human Condition” honors MMAC’s commitment to sharing the history of the Bataan Death March through the artwork of WWII prisoner of war and Montana artist Ben Steele. Summer Backpacking Course: “Wild Rockies Summer Semester” – June 15-Aug. 14, across Montana. Students begin in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem of southcentral Montana, migrating steadily north in a series of backcountry trips and town meetings with regional community and conservation leaders. They will examine conservation from a broad regional perspective, a Native American perspective and at the local landscape level, with the goal of finding a comprehensive understanding of these issues. Teacher Professional Development Workshop – All day, Aug. 10-11, Skaggs Building Room 114. The Center for Environmental Health Sciences offers high school science teachers a series of online courses and in-person professional development workshops. Teachers will learn how to incorporate environmental health lessons into course curriculum, gain hands-on experience and explore methods for implementing student-conducted research projects in their own classrooms. National Diabetes Prevention Program – 5-7 p.m., Campus Fitness and Recreation Center Fitness Conference Room. St. Patrick Hospital presents this course to UM employees and their spouse/partner every Wednesday, July 22-Nov. 4. The Centers for Disease Control’s National Diabetes Prevention Program is an evidence-based lifestyle change program for preventing Type 2 diabetes.
