Tribes honor members who worked for purchase of Kerr Dam

| July 2, 2015 1:32 PM

 Lake County Leader

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes will honor its leaders this month for their work toward ownership of Kerr Dam.

The “People of Vision” events will include an honoring of all former Tribal Council members, with special regard to those members who served in 1984, when the tribes were focused on gaining ownership of the Kerr project. The tribes will assume ownership of Kerr Dam on Sept. 5, becoming the first native American tribe to own a hydroelectric facility.

Esyapqeyni Celebration

This begins directly after grand entry, at 3:30 p.m., in the main dance arbor of the Arlee powwow grounds.

Standing Arrow Celebration

Elmo, July 18

Begins after grand entry, at 4 p.m. in the main dance arbor of the Elmo powwow grounds.

All Tribal Council members who have ever served as an elected official of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are invited to participate.

Council members who served during 1984 include Joseph Felsman, James Steele, Sr., Robert McCrea, Al Hewankorn, Michael (Mickey) Pablo, Victor Stinger, Ron Therriault, Elmer (Sonny) Morigeau, Kevin Howlett and Teresa Wall-McDonald.

“We appreciate the dedication and sacrifice that was made during each of these leaders’ time of service on the Tribal Council,” CSKT Chairman Vernon Finley said.  “On the eve of acquiring the Kerr Project, we want to express our appreciation for the council of 1984 whose work has made ownership of the dam possible.”

“Kerr Dam once exemplified destruction to our way of life,” Finley said.  “In the future, we anticipate that this resource will help restore and revitalize our tribes as we continue the important work of protecting our reserved and aboriginal lands, caring for our people, and preserving our cultural resources.”

The following list includes the names and dates of service of all CSKT council members who have served since the start of a tribal constitution and government in 1935.
