It may not have been the famous ice bucket challenge, but the teams playing in ALS Memorial Golf tournament did get dumped on.
The 13th annual Sagmiller/Williams Memorial ALS Golf Tournament started out with an early morning group of golfers taking on an overcast morning at the Mission Mountain Country Club in Ronan. That turned into a drizzle that lasted most of the morning and into the afternoon, but the teams played through it. Another group started at 1 p.m. The winning team was from Westland Seed and included Michael Reeve, Lindsey Reeve, Zach Underwood, and Chris Clary. They had a scorecard play off with two other teams to take the win.
Eighteen teams pre-registered for the golf scramble in memory of Ken Sagmiller and Pat Williams. Both men were locals who lost their lives to ALS, also know as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
David Sagmiller started the event 13 years ago after his father, Ken, passed away. They created the event to help others with the disease and to provide scholarships to high school students. Nancy Williams, wife of the late Pat Williams, said her husband was an avid golfer. A few years after his death, Williams volunteered to help with the event that her he used to golf in. After that, they renamed to tournament to honor her husband as well.
The event helps others in the area that have the disease. According to Williams, there is one local who currently has the disease, and four others have passed away from it.
This year, the tournament is giving four scholarships out to high school seniors from Ronan and Charlo. Over the years, the event has paid out $28,000 in family assistance and scholarships.
