Polson track teams enter divisionals in Libby

Special to the Leader

This weekend in Libby, both Polson track squads will compete at the Northwest A Divisional over two days.

Competitors who have already met qualifying standards for participating at the State A meet include Jacob Clairmont in both hurdles, long jump and pole vault; the girls short relay team, Mariah Corrigan as well as Erin Sampson in the javelin and Lydia Bowman in the pole vault.

The top five placers at the divisional meet advance to compete at the State A meet in Laurel the following weekend.  Others who are favored to place at the divisional meet include Joe Gallatin in the throwing events, Mike Mercer along with Malia Seeley in the distance events, Madison Wheeler in the hurdles, Colton Cote along with Matt Rensvold in the 400 and Tiara Duford as well as Chadelle Smith in the sprinting events.

Several others who are lurking just below the radar could punch their tickets to compete at the state level.

At Polson this past Saturday, the Polson track teams hosted the annual Athletic Booster Club meet with eight regional teams in attendance.

For the girls, pride of place goes to the short relay team, which held off a furious challenge by the defending champion Corvallis squad to capture first place.  The Polson short relay squad has posted the top time among Class A schools and looms as a contender to vie for a place on the podium during the postseason.

Girls relay team members competing in multiple events accounted for almost half of the Lady Pirate team points.  In the throws, Erin Sampson placed in a pair of events, while freshman Malia Seeley put in a good showing in the distance events and Madison Wheeler placed in both hurdles events.

For the boys, Jacob Clairmont placed in a trio of events as well as has already met qualifying standards in others.  In the throws, Joe Gallatin placed in two events, which is all the more impressive after being hit in the shoulder by an errant shot put over a week ago.  Other placers include Matt Rensvold in the 400, Danny DiGiallonardo in the short hurdles and both relay teams.
