By JOHN HEGLIE

Special for the Leader

At Missoula last Thursday through Friday at the Missoula County Invitational volleyball tournament, the Lady Pirates faced off against some of the toughest volleyball competition west of the Continental Divide. Polson won a half dozen games over the course of the two day tournament, beating a quartet of quality AA teams in the process. In a couple of other games, they let their opponent wiggle off the hook. All in all, the team was not far from splitting the sum total of their matches. The games do not count against their regular season record.

The biggest guns blazing at the net were Chadelle Smith and Haley Fyant, who combined to post 86 cumulative kills. Lauren Lefthand, Kaelyn Smith and Hannah Fryberger also tallied double figures for spikes. Top gun aces at the service line were Fryberger with 10, Kaelyn Smith with nine along with Fyant and Lydia Dupuis collaborating on another seven aces. Top digging defensive dynamos were Dupuis with 50 digs, followed by Shawna Lenz with 38 scoops off the floor. Marlee Congdon and Erin Sampson collaborated on another 58 digs.

Polson (1-4, 4-6) travels to Missoula on Thursday for a cross classification clash with the 6B Loyola Sacred Heart Breakers, then travel to Dillon on Saturday to stick it to the Lady Beavers on their pond. The Lady Pirates return home on Tuesday, October 27, when they will host Hamilton.
