Polson's Duford tallies 18 goals, four hat tricks on season
The 2015 Lady Pirate girls soccer squad (6-2 conference, 9-4 overall) turned in the second best record in the history of Polson soccer tracing back to its inception in 1997. The high water mark belongs to the 2002 Lady Pirates (8-0-2 conference, 11-2-2 overall), who were winners of the Eastern A conference crown that season. At the State A tournament, the 2002 squad lost a semifinal shootout to Whitefish, then went on to take the consolation match to place third. Lily Coble scored 22 goals that 2002 season, marking her as one of the most potent weapons ever to plunder the pitch among the annals of Lady Pirate soccer lore. Game result archives from other surrounding seasons have not been able to be perused to ascertain whether Coble owns the title for highest goal scorer in Polson history.
Each season has its own distinguishing features and the 2015 Lady Pirates are no exception. At no time in the history of the program has Polson girls soccer vanquished perennial contenders Whitefish as well as Columbia Falls during the course of the same season. Yet these 2015 Lady Pirates not only tethered down the Lady Bulldogs 4-1 on the road, but then caged the visiting WildKats 2-1 at home.
Junior striker Tiara Duford scored 18 goals this season that included four hat tricks or better. Freshman midfielder Ashlee Howell warrants being conferred with Miss Manners merits on account of her perfect hostess capabilities for setting the table for others, dishing out assists sixteen times if not better for her fellow teammates to capitalize upon.
The Lady Pirates bid farewell to a trio of seniors in defender/midfielder extraordinaire Brenna Clarke, Amaya Poole and manager Sheridan Houle, although accelerated graduations may impact the roster further come next season. When the Lady Pirates recalibrate for next season, one of their goals will assuredly be to make a deeper foray into the bracket of the State tournament.
Below is a summation of the 2015 Lady Pirate goal/assist tally. Included among the contributors are a tally of the shots taken at the vicinity of the goal (SH) which is inclusive of those distinguished as being targeted shots on the frame of the goal (sog). A tally of some cumulative career numbers is included for a select numbers of players. A cursory layout of the Junior Varsity games are also appended.
Look in next week’s paper for final stats for the boys.
