Battle of the unbeaten set for Friday night

Local football teams went 3-1 this past weekend, with Mission taking the only loss.

Arlee had a bye and remains undefeated. Charlo is also undefeated after a convincing win in Victor. The two will meet up on Friday night in Charlo for their homecoming. Both teams are packed with talent, especially on the offensive side. Arlee has outscored their opponents 118-28 through two games, and Charlo has outscored their opponents 152-32 through three games. The battle of the unbeatens will feature players like All-State returners Patrick Big Sam and Brad Brazill, up against the quick attack of players like Michael Delaney and Trent Dennison. Other players to watch will be Arlee’s Tyler Tanner, Harold Yocum, and Isaac Desjarlais and Charlo’s Brady Fryberger, Jared Doty, and Bridger Smith.

While this game is taking place fairly early in the season, it is a conference matchup, and very well could have playoff implications. As rivals, Arlee will be looking to put a damper on Charlo’s homecoming, and both teams will be fighting for a shot at the conference title.

Charlo 46

Victor 16

Charlo continued to show their high-powered offensive skills on Saturday in a conference matchup against Victor. The Vikings piled up 493 total yards of offense in their 46-16 win. The game was scoreless until the second quarter, when Michael Delaney scored the first three touchdowns on runs, then threw the fourth to Jade Smith. Charlo scored 20 points in the second quarter. Landers Smith ran one in from two yards out in the third for their only score of that quarter. In the fourth, Victor finally put up some points, but Charlo answered with two more touchdowns, one on a 12-yard run from Brady Fryberger and one on a 11-yard run from Jared Doty. Victor threw four interceptions, which didn’t help their chances of beating the undefeated Vikings.

Michael Delaney was 5-10 as quarterback, throwing for 84 yards and a touchdown. He ran the ball 10 times for 132 yards and three touchdowns. Trent Dennison was 5-15 as quarterback and threw for 42 yards. He ran the ball 11 times for 85 yards. Jade Smith had eight carries for 38 yards and caught three passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Jared Doty had 8.5 tackles with six solos and two interceptions. Bridger Smith had 7.5 tackles with five solos. Kane Shenyer and Toby Odom each had an interception.

Charlo takes on the undefeated Arlee Warriors for their homecoming game on Friday night.

Mission 12

Florence 20

On Friday night, the Bulldogs hosted the Florence Falcons in what would be a tough contest. In the first quarter, Florence struck first, then Gus Bosley ran one in from three yards at the end of the quarter. The second quarter didn’t see either team score. In the third quarter, both team exchange fumbles, but a few key long passes by Florence put them up 14-6 at the end of the third. Throughout the second half, Mission had chances to even the score, but couldn’t quite convert. Florence scored again near the end of the game to put it out of reach for the Bulldogs, and a 40-yard pass from Nick Durglo to Anthony Gravagno with seconds left on the clock came to late for Mission, who dropped to 1-2 on the year. Gus Bosley had 88 yards rushing on 18 carries and a touchdown for Mission.

Unfortunately for Mission, running back and defensive back Israel Umphrey left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter and was unable to return.

Mission travels to Bigfork on Friday.

The Pirates traveled to Corvallis on Friday night looking for their first win of the season. The first play of the game saw Polson’s Hudson Smith run back a touchdown on the opening kickoff, but it was called back due to a penalty. Later, Tanner Wilson would score on a six yard run for their only touchdown of the quarter. In the second quarter, Polson’s Hudson Smith caught a touchdown from Wilson. Haden Smith blocked a PAT after Corvallis scored to keep Polson within two.

After halftime, Corvallis scored again, but then Matt Rensvold and Tanner Wilson both ran one in to put the Pirates up going into the fourth quarter.

The scoring from the fourth quarter was misconstrued, but Wilson threw two touchdowns, one to Rensvold and one to Smith, and Rensvold ran for another and the Pirates won the game 48-43.

Corvallis tried multiple onside kicks during the fourth quarter, but Polson’s special teams had good hands and recovered all of them.

Defensively, Polson had a better game, with interceptions by both Jacob Harrod and Hudson Smith. Rensvold, Haden Smith, and Kabe Forman-Webster all had sacks, and Rensvold led the tackles with 15.
