Polson 2

Frenchtown 1

At Polson after a scoreless first half, the host Pirates tallied first off a Michael Vergeront loft of a defender deflected feed from Alex Encizo that cleared the outstretched grasp of the Bronc keeper. Frenchtown netted the equalizer a few minutes later when the Broncs literally crashed the keeper of the Pirate goal. The momentum from the consciousness clouding collision that eliciting the sound of silence from the attending whistle carried him behind the plane of the goal as he tried to gain control of the ball. With just a handful of minutes remaining in the game, Sutton Kanta redirected a pass from Mike Mercer past the Bronc keeper to score the winning tally.

Polson (2-1) has now won as many games as the past pair of seasons combined.

At Corvallis this past Saturday, the visiting Pirates played the defending State A champion Blue Devils closely in a tightly contested match.  Corvallis had scored a combined 31 goals over the course of a preceding quartet of wins.

The Pirates had their share of chances to blemish the shutout.  Andrew Hanson ricocheted a blast off the crossbar in the first half and lofted one over during the second period.  Danny DiGiallonardo also had a pair of shots on goal that straddled both halves of play.  Other second half scoring opportunities included a penalty kick by Mike Mercer and a boot by Michael Vergeront that shanked wide of its target.

Polson (2-2) embarks upon their conference slate with games against Bigfork in the annual battle of the bays on Thursday, then travel to Whitefish on Saturday.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Polson 4 Frenchtown 0

At Polson, the host Lady Pirates tightened the reins on visiting Frenchtown to preclude any horsing around by keeping the Lady Broncs contained behind the corral.  Amelia Pittsley took a feed from Ashlee Howell to knot the first tally.  Tiara “T” Duford, JaNessa “G” Taylor and Howell added further frosting to the cake.  The score could have been more substantial.  Defender Olivia Hewston took a spot on direct kick from about 40 yards out just before intermission that launched with an arcing trajectory like a missile honing in to acquire its target, forcing the keeper to deflect it over the crossbar to keep the projectile from penetrating net.

Key defensive plays involving deflections by defenders of volatile shots at the Polson goal were turned in by Hannah Hobbs along with Beatrix Frissell in the first half and another by Brenna Clarke in the second half.

Corvallis 4

Polson 1

At Corvallis this past Saturday, the visiting Lady Pirates outshot the host Lady Blue Devils by a sizeable margin, but it would be boots that evaded the keeper which would determine the outcome of the contest. JaNessa Taylor, aka “G,” tallied the lone Polson goal in the first half off a shot that deflected off the defender into the goal.

Team LP came out somewhat flat the second half, while their hosts made adjustments that paid off dividends, saddling Polson with their first loss of the season.

Despite disappointment over the loss, Polson (3-1) is off to its best start under the tenure of coach Michael Hewston.  Now instilled with additional incentive to improve the quality level of their play, the Lady Pirates embark upon a road trip this week with games against the Bigfork Vals on Thursday, then seek to muzzle the Whitefish Lady Bulldogs and state leading scorer Haley Nicholson on Saturday.  Last season the Lady Pirates swept the series with Whitefish for the very first time and hope to carve further into their disproportionate history that now stands at 1-23-1 as best could be traced.
