Polson 4

Whitefish 1

At Whitefish this past Saturday, Tiara Duford wrapped up a road trip shopping spree accentuated by a hair accessory when she closed out the game wearing a hat, namely three goal hat trick.  Polson had never beaten Whitefish on their home turf extending back to 1997, a string of dominance that would be obliterated in incontrovertible fashion.  Duford initiated the onslaught by picking up a pair of first half goals off assists from Ashlee Howell and Kiana Snyder.  JaNessa “G” Taylor added another goal to give the Lady Pirates a healthy three-goal lead by intermission.  Midway through the second period, in a fitting manner, Duford used her head to redirect a Howell initiated corner kick into the back of the net to culminate her hat trick.

While Duford took home a hat on account of her high-octane output, the Polson defense deserved an equal share of hats off for stifling the Lady Bulldog offense. The back row quartet of Olivia Hewston, Hannah Hobbs, Sophia Sisler and Beatrix Frissell fractionalized access to the Polson net, leaving minimal cleanup for keeper Jenna Evertz. But midfielder Brenna Clarke merits special acknowledgement for locking down Class A leading scorer Hailey Nicholson, who came into the contest averaging close to three goals and two assists per game, and was held to a single goal late in the match.

Polson (2-0, 5-1) will have already faced State A twice runner-up Columbia Falls on Tuesday, then travel to Libby on Saturday, September 26.

Bigfork 1

At Bigfork this past Thursday, Tiara Duford scored a hat trick to vault Polson past the host Valkyries.  Although Bigfork would score first, Duford would net the equalizer midway through the first half off an assist from Ashlee Howell.  Early in the second half, a cluster of Lady Pirate players converged upon the Bigfork goal, where Val goalkeeper Celeste Rehbein repelled a pummeling of multiple salvos from Amber Clarke, Ashlee Howell, Duford and others. But Duford slipped one by her defenders for the go ahead goal, then placed the exclamation point on the evening with her third bountiful boot to complete the hat trick.

Whitefish 1

At Whitefish this past Saturday, the visiting Pirates and the host Bulldogs deadlocked in a 1-1 stalemate, perpetuating last season’s trend that saw both clubs tie one another both times.

After a scoreless first half, Mack Moderie found the back of the net off an assist from Alex Encizo to stake Polson to a 1-0 advantage. The lead held up for much of the second half until the waning minutes of the game when the Bulldogs netted the equalizer.  Pirate keeper Russ Smith was able to get a hand on the bullet, but not enough arm to deflect the speeding projectile out of harm’s way.

Polson had their share of opportunities to extend their narrow margin when the Magic Mike duo of Mercer and Vergeront ricocheted shots off the crossbar, while another trio deflected attempts off the post. Encizo contributed his fifth assist of the young season.

Coach Adam Fansher commented that he was happy with the team performance, which created its share of chances to win the game.  Fansher acknowledged that “if we can improve on our finishing touches, it will continue to be a successful season.”

At Bigfork this past Thursday, the visiting Pirates opened the scoring when freshman Mack Moderie scored off an assist by Mike Mercer, then flipped the script with Mercer contributing the goal off an assist from freshman Connor Lanier minutes later.  Polson culminated its scoring by means of a Wenzelian hat trick turned by Wenzel brothers Bridger and Jaben to stake the Pirates to a 5-0 advantage before the Vikings would be able to manufacture a response.

MVCA

At Polson this past weekend, Mission Valley Christian Academy (MVCA) hosted a coed soccer tournament with games featuring 30 minute halves rather than customary 40 minute intervals.   The first games followed a pool play format to determine seeding, followed by bracket play elimination games thereafter.  MVCA won both pool play games to capture the #1-seed.  After prevailing in their semifinal contest, they would face 2014 tournament champion Summit Prep for the current championship.  MVCA would successfully counter the Summit Prep mode of attack while building a several goal cushion to secure the title.

MVCA coed boosts their record to 6-0 on the season.
