Salish Kootenai College opens student health clinic
On April 4, 2016, the doors will open for the first-ever Student Health Center on the campus of the Salish Kootenai College (SKC) located in Pablo, Mont.
In collaboration with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) Tribal Health Department, the Student Health Center will provide limited primary medical care, nursing, referrals, and health education resources to the SKC students, their qualified dependents, SKC faculty, and staff.
“This agreement between Tribal Health and SKC is an extension of our mission to increase the overall health and quality of life for our tribal community,” said Kevin Howlett, Department Head of CSKT Tribal Health Department. “Creating this resource enriches the campus, and helps to keep students focused on their academics through the access to important health resources.”
Some examples of resources and healthcare that will be provided at the new
Student Health Center will include:
• Diagnosis and management of minor illness and injury
• Interval management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes or high blood pressure
• Simple diagnostic testing such as urinalysis, pregnancy testing, strep screening, mono-spot, rapid flu, finger stick glucose monitoring, TB testing
• Physical exams for educational programs, DOT, fire fighting
• Immunizations
• Health education
• Prevention services
The Student Health Center services will be provided congruent with the academic calendar, September through June each school year. In the off-season, a reduced set of services will be offered.
Clinic hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm daily.
Changes in the schedule and offerings will be posted and published by SKC. A formal dedication event for the new SKC Student Health Center will take place in May with details to be announced.
