Pirates' grapplers come up big in Mining City Duels
BUTTE — The Polson wrestling team got another assessment of where their team is at from the Butte Mining City Duel Meet Saturday in Butte.
“The tournament attracts all of the best teams at every single level actually,” coach Bob Owen said. “The beauty of this is that it’s a duel meet tournament with a format where a kid can get beat two matches, be out, and continue to wrestle. The format is great and you know your kids are going to be in at least matches when you get to go.”
At the invitational, some of the Pirates’ younger wrestlers received a lot of “mat time,” according to Owen.
“There is a lot of promise there,” Owen said. “Hopefully, we can retain them. Learning wrestling is a process because you can get beat up. They have to take their lumps but we will train them as long as they are willing to stay with us.”
During the tournament West Hellgate High School, Billings, Helena Capital, and Bozeman.
“It was excellent, there were a few good Double-A schools including both Capital and Bozeman, and that was just great competition,” Owen said. “The duel competition helped get our better kids mat time and our core group wrestled really well. All of them had excellent records over the weekends.”
The Pirates had three wrestlers go undefeated in the tournament including RJ Pierre and Cedrick Baker at 103-pounds. Parker Adler also went undefeated when he wrestled at 138 pounds.
“Results can kind of vary when kids move down a weight class and results can dictate some of it,” Owen said. “He wants to compete at the state tournament and I think 138 pounds is a good spot for Parker. The two best kids at our level are 132 and 135. They are going for their fourth state title this year. Parker is right in between there and that is a great spot.”
Owen also credited Hunter Fritsch, Ethan Talley, Jasper Drake, and Noah Humphrey for contributing to the Pirates’ team effort as they prepare to send seven wrestlers into the Coeur D’alene, Idaho tournament. The Tri-State meet will feature wrestlers from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Alaska, Oregon, and Arizona, according to Owen, who said those are the states that have been representing there.
Owen said he felt the Idaho Tournament is a “measuring stick” to how wrestlers will do at state.
“The level of competition in Idaho is far bigger than in our state tournament,” Owen said. “You can compete and use that as a measuring stick on how you are going to do at the state tournament. There are so many great wrestlers (in this tournament), it is hard to name them all.”
