Chiefs wrestlers take first in Corvallis Tournament
The Ronan wrestling team wasn’t deterred by their sudden change of plans in their wrestling schedule.
The Chiefs’ wrestling team, which was originally scheduled to travel to Great Falls on Friday and Saturday, decided to go to the Corvallis Tournament because of unfavorable weather.
“Our team is gaining a little bit of speed, and I feel the morale was a little bit down on Friday at practice because we were scheduled to go to Great Falls,” wrestling coach James Muir said. “However, the Corvallis Tournament was a great little tournament. We were lucky enough to get our team into Corvallis and wrestle this weekend.”
Muir said he’s seen some “significant improvements” with his Chiefs’ team since the Chiefs began their season at the Polson Invitational.
“As a duel team, we aren’t quite as strong because we are younger,” Muir said. “When we turn it around, it’s a different scenario. We are much stronger at tournaments than we are duels,” Muir said.
Muir said he felt like his team is really starting to pick up the pace.
“We are a way better tournament team and results that we had are a good deal,” Muir said. “We fought for positioning. Our guys were willing to battle and it was good.”
The Chiefs won the competition by scoring 176 points.
“We actually had two of our varsity starters not competing in that tournament,” Muir said. “One of them had medical issues and two of them had family stuff. That came this last weekend without our whole lineup. We didn’t even have our 160-pounder or our 182-pound JV wrestler. When we are hitting on all cylinders, that margin of score is going to increase when our depth increases. We won the tournament by 15 points and everyone in our lineup is well ahead with no issues or concerns.”
The Chiefs’ Caden Rhine won three matches only to fall in the championship match to Corvallis-Darby’s Carter. Mission’s Robert Dempsey defeated Sheadyn Croft by a fall in the third place match.
