After a great weekend of tennis for the Polson teams last weekend, they hit the road for the state tournament in hopes of getting some hardware.

The girls, who won their tenth straight divisional title in Kalispell, sent two doubles teams and two singles players to state. The boys, who took second at divisionals, sent two doubles teams.

Cadis Chowning and Matt Sitter lost their first match, as did Quaid Harlan and Jaron Morgan. Morgan, who played singles last weekend, took Colin Kenney’s spot on that team due to a knee injury sustained by Kenney at the divisional tournament. On the back side of the bracket, both doubles teams won their next match. In the next round, Chowning and Sitter lost 3-6, 4-6 to be eliminated from the tournament. Harlan and Morgan won their next two matches to play in the consolation semifinal for a shot at a third or fourth place finish. Unfortunately, they lost that match, but still played for fifth and sixth. In that match they lost 4-6, 3-6 to finish the season with a sixth place finish. By finishing in the top six, they both earned All-State honors.

On the girls’ side, Mollie Lemm and Marlee Congdon both won their first matches. In the quarterfinals, Lemm lost a tough match to the eventual third place finisher. Congdon won her match in three sets to move to the semifinals. In the semis, Congdon battled through another three set match, but this time did not come out victorious, losing 6-4, 1-6, 1-6.

Meanwhile, on the back side of the bracket, Lemm was battling back for a chance at third place. She won her first match, then met up with a familiar foe in Emily Getts, who she had handed a big loss to the week before in the divisional semifinal.

Getts was out for revenge and found it, although not easily. Lemm won the first set before dropping the next two. That loss eliminated Lemm from the tournament. After defeating Lemm, Getts moved on to play Congdon for a spot in the consolation final. Congdon almost beat Getts the last time they met, but she would not be able to pull it off this time either, and moved into the fifth and sixth place match. In that match, Congdon defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-1 to take fifth place and earn All-State recognition.

Polson had two doubles teams go to state for the girls. The first was Shawna Lenz and Cassie Carlyle. The second was Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen.

Hewston and Lundeen lost their first match in three sets, while Carlyle and Lundeen won theirs in three. Hewston and Lundeen would win their next match, but a loss by Lenz and Carlyle in the quarterfinals meant that the two had to play each other in loser out action. Carlyle and Lenz would win that match over their teammates and move all the way to the consolation semifinal, where they lost in three sets to be pushed into the fifth and sixth place match. In that match the won another three set match to take fifth overall and earn All-State honors.
