At Kalispell this past weekend at the season opening 2016 Emeralds SMASH softball tournament, four Polson-based teams ranging in age group (10U,12U,14U,16U) competed against other entrants for an opportunity to haul home some hardware.

Two teams advanced into the championship with the 12U Purple Wave winning the title in their age bracket, while the 10U Lil Lakers finished as runnerup. A representative sampling of games is featured below. Polson will host their annual SPLASH tournament this weekend, Friday through Sunday, June 10-12.

12U bracket

Championship

Purple Wave 12,

Lady Regulators 11 (9 inn.)

In the 12U championship against the Montana Regulators, Polson rallied from a four run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game after regulation, thereby sending the contest into an extra innings international tie breaker to resolve the deadlock by placing a runner on second base while the team at the plate attempts to score as many runs as it can until their third out. In the top of both the eighth and ninth innings, the Regulators plated runs which the Purple Wave countered by matching with their own to tie the game up once again. After the third tie of the contest in the bottom half of the ninth, Liz Scabbyrobe laid down an exquisite bunt in front of the plate. As Scabbyrobe scampered her way to first base, Savannah Carpentier took a huge lead off third base that baited a throw from the catcher. As the third base infielder caught the ball, Carpentier capped the rally by executing Supergirl slide into home plate for the winning run before the tag could be applied.

Bracket play.

Single elimination.

Wolfpack 12, Purple Rain 8

In the single elimination bracket play round, the long layoff awaiting which opponent would emerge in conjunction with the unseasonably high temperatures took their toll upon the offense of the Purple Rain as if it evaporated when subjected to the dry summery conditions. After plating most of their runs on passed balls in the opening frame off the Wolfpack pitching battery, former Polson player Emma Shew settled down while her Wolfpack teammates heated up to eliminate Polson from contention. Purple Rain players Kaelyn Smith and Kaylanna DesJarlais each had two hits over the course of the contest, while Rain runs were scored off wild pitches or passed balls.
