Schacher sets three more weightlifting world records
Skip Schacher is back at it. The soon to be 76-year-old Ronan resident competed in Missoula at the Big Sky Classic bench press and dead lift championships on March 19 and set three new world records. He said that 66 lifters of different age and weight groups competed.
Along with qualifying for the world championships in November, Schacher added to his impressive list of world records. In the 75-79 age group, Schacher bench pressed 193 pounds and dead lifted 250 pounds. He also competed in the push-pull competition, where they add the weights together. He excelled at all three events, earning himself a spot at the WABDL championships in Las Vegas later this year.
Schacher is no stranger to the world championships. He has held five world records before the three new ones he set a few weeks ago. According toSchacher, the records get broke fairly often, but for the most part, it seems like he is doing most of the record breaking. “I keep improving as I get more into it,” he said last week after he and his group finished lifting at the SKC gym.
Schacher has not been competing in weight lifting for all that long. One of his friends introduced him to the sport after he was already retired. Today, Schacher has a group of older people who he lifts with in the SKC gym. Last fall in an interview at the gym, he said lifting in Pablo is both exercise and a good way to solve the world’s problems.
He said the best part of attending these competitions is to meet people and make new friends. “I’ve met some really great people,” he said.
