Ronan boys win divisional tournament
The Ronan tennis team edged out Mission by just two points to take the divisional tournament in Mission this past weekend. They were led by Fisher Shima, who won the singles title, beating out Mission’s Tim Van Elst in an exciting three set match. Shima heads back to the state tournament, where he played in the semifinals last year. Ronan’s doubles team of Ethan Blevins and Colt Roullier also played in the championship, but they were defeated by Mission’s team of Andrew Esslinger and Nate Doll, 6-3, 7-5.
Ronan’s Bailey Moss, who lost to teammate Shima in the semifinals, came back to take third place for the Chiefs. Caleb Koehler and Coleman Taylor also took third, this time on the doubles side.
All four of Mission’s boys will advance to the state tournament, as Warren Castor took fifth to advance as well. Also advancing from Ronan is Thomas Yellowbird.
Results from the first day of competition were not made available.
Over in Superior, the Mission girls finished second, followed by Ronan in third. Mission’s senior Daisie VandenBos defeated Ronan’s Hannah Moss and teammate Alyssa Rith to play in the championship. In the championship, VandenBos lost 2-6, 3-6, but will still compete at the state tournament. Rith went on to take third place and also advances to state.
For Ronan, the doubles team of Julia Matkovich and Breanna Turpin made it to the championship match, but would take second. Teammate Hannah Moss would end up fourth after playing her way back through the backside of the bracket. The other Ronan doubles team of Aurrora Watkins and Kelea Ilac ended up fifth.
The Class B/C state tournament takes place in Missoula this week.
The Polson tennis team finished up their regular season this week against Whitefish. The girls won 6-1 to end their season undefeated as a team. The boys lost a tight one by a score of 3-4.
