This past weekend, Class B/C had their state tournament, while Class A had their divisional tournament. There were two doubles teams and a singles player that placed in the top six at the state tournament in Missoula. In Kalispell, the Polson girls took home their 10th straight divisional title.

Ronan/Mission

On a rainy weekend in Missoula, play was moved inside to the Peak Racquet club on Thursday. In their first round games, Mission’s Daisie Vanden Bos and Alyssa Rith both lost, as did the Ronan doubles team of Breanna Turpin and Julia Matkovich and their singles qualifier, Hannah Moss. It ended up being a rough weekend for local girls, as all of the girls ended up losing their next game to be eliminated from the tournament.

The boys had more luck. Mission’s doubles team of Nate Doll and Andrew Esslinger powered their way into the semifinal match against a tough Libby team. In a match that would take three sets, the Mission boys lost 5-7, 6-3, 5-7. That sent them down to the consolation semifinal, where they met up with Ronan’s Ethan Blevins and Colton Roullier, who had won their first match, lost their second, and battled all the way back to the consolation semis. In that match against their Mission counterparts, Doll and Esslinger won 7-6, 6-1. That sent Mission into the consolation, and Ronan into the fifth and sixth place match. Both teams lost their next match to finish in fourth and sixth respectively. All four athletes were All-State selections

In singles, Ronan’s Thomas Yellowbird and Mission’s Warren Castor ended their season after two losses. Mission’s Tim Van Elst won his first match, then lost his second and third. Ronan’s Bailey Moss lost his first match, then won his next two on the back side of the bracket before being eliminated in his fourth match. Ronan’s Fisher Shima, who won the divisional tournament last week, was playing with an injury, but won his second round game before losing in the quarterfinals. After sustaining another injury, he continued on, winning his next two then playing in the consolation semifinal. He lost that match, then won his fifth and sixth place match to take fifth place overall. He was also named an All-State honor recipient.

Polson

Up in Kalispell, the Polson girls had a great weekend to win their tenth straight title. Head coach Bob Hislop commented, “If players are willing to work as hard as this group has, they have an opportunity to make things happen. It’s not that different from trying to put together a car. If you combine the right components, then this kind of accomplishment that can take place.”

One of the matches that was anticipated to be a tough one was between two undefeated girls who had not played yet this year. Polson’s Mollie Lemm took on Emily Getts in the semifinals. Lemm won that match 7-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, in the other semifinal, Polson’s number one singles player, Marlee Congdon, defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-0. That set up a friendly championship match between Lemm and Congdon. Congdon took that match 7-5, 6-4.

“The two girls are kind of carbon copies of each other,” Hislop said of Lemm and Getts. “They’re both super intelligent and Mollie plays a real cerebral game. If you’re going to win some of these matches you can’t take a point off and one of our assistants said ‘I don’t think Mollie took a single point off.’”

In the doubles competition, Natalee Wheeler and Hunter Nunlist won their first round match, then lost in the quarterfinals. Cassie Carlyle and Shawna Lenz had a bye and then won their quarterfinal match, as did Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen. In the semifinals, both lost their matches, but then met up in the consolation. Carlyle and Lenz would come back from a set down to win the next two over their fellow team of Hewston and Lundeen.

On the boys’ side, John Moore, Jaron Morgan, and Carson McDaniel all won in the first round. In the quarterfinals, all three ended up losing.

In the doubles competition, Wyatt Ducharme and Hudson Smith won their first match to join the two other doubles teams in the quarterfinals. Matt Sitter and Cadis Chowning won their match, as did Quaid Harlan and Collin Kenney.

Ducharme and Smith lost their quarterfinal match. In the semifinals, both doubles teams won, although Sitter and Chowning took three sets to do it.

That set up a Polson championship match, where Chowning and Sitter took top honors due to an injury. As a team, the Polson boys took second place for the second year in a row.

The Class A state tournament starts on Thursday. Moving on will be Marlee Congdon, Mollie Lemm, the doubles team of Cadis Chowning and Matt Sitter, the doubles team of Quaid Harland and Collin Kenney, the doubles team of Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen, and the doubles team of Cassie Carlyle and Shawna Lenz.
