BUTTE — The Arlee High School Lady Scarlets were unable to sustain the momentum they built in last week’s Class C District Tournament in their two losses to Lone Peak and Gardiner in Divisionals.

In the Scarlet’s first match against Lone Peak, they struggled to adapt to the fast-pace style of play eastern Montana teams are accustomed to playing.

The Scarlets fell to Lone Peak in four games 7-25, 25-18, 12-25, 17-25.

“Whenever we get into situations when we play teams from the east, they have a faster-paced game,” Scarlets’ Coach Lonie Morin said. It’s not that we can’t play with them. it’s just that they are more consistent and it always shocks us when we get there. We were up and down. Like I said, consistency is the key and we have to be able to figure that out.”

The Scarlets had contributions from Carly Hergett, who finished with 10 of the team’s 24 kills. Hergett and Tomi Brazill ended up leading the team with aces with two each. Mikaya Rieken finished with 15 of the team’s 79 digs, and Hergett led the team with three of the five blocks at the net.

The Scarlets defeated Drummond in the loser’s bracket 25-15, 25-23, 25-19.

The Scarlets were led by Ashley Revis, who finished with 12 of the team’s 31 kills. Rieken finished with three of the team’s 11 aces, Eden Morin finished with 16 blocks, and Bryndle Goyins finished with two of the team’s three blocks in the effort.

“Our team was on fire and I can’t even tell you,” Morin said. “They were all hitting and not making any errors. We had 31 kills. That is the best we’ve ever done so far.”

The Scarlets lost their next match in the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination tournament falling 23-25, 10-25, 20-25 to Gardiner.

“They ended up in the final match with Ennis and we weren’t out of the running,” Morin said. “We just couldn’t complete our goal. Gardiner was just very consistent and we made silly errors.”

Morin attributed the success of the eastern teams in the tournament to “culture.”

“It really comes down to culture and coaching, for sure,” Morin said. “They have had consistency in their coaching staff (on the east) and that is why they continue to make it back year after year. I really saw improvement in our team (during this tournament).”

The Lady Vikings fall in the tournament

The Charlo Lady Vikings finished their season with two consecutive losses to Gardiner 7-25, 16-25, 15-25. The Lady Vikes proceeded to lose their second match 17-25, 10-25, 19-25.
