A Mission-valley woman has been selected as one of three new board members for the nonprofit organization Humanities Montana.

April Charlo, who currently works as the Flathead Reservation tribal outreach coordinator for Special Olympics Montana, was selected along with Hill County rancher Caroline Bitz and former American Civil Liberties Union of Montana Executive Director Scott Crichton.

“Humanities Montana’s board is thrilled to welcome these new members,” Ken Egan, Executive Director of Humanities Montana said in a press release issued earlier this month. “They bring a commitment to cultural programming for diverse Montanans. They make a strong board even stronger.”

Charlo has degrees in Native American studies and Elementary Education from Salish Kootenai College and a Masters in Education Leadership from University of Montana, according to the release. She formerly served as the executive director at the Nkwusm Salish Language School in Arlee, and as a board member of Healthy Native Communities Partnership and Native Generational Change.

Humanities Montana is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program provides services and grants supporting public programs in history, literature, civil conversations and public issues, the release states.
