Corvallis 3, Polson 0

At Corvallis in the State A quarterfinals on Saturday, the visiting Pirates held their own against the two-time defending state champion Blue Devils.

Polson had comparable possession and shot on goal opportunities, but Corvallis proved efficient at acquiring the bullseye on the target to advance. The first goal was headed from a well executed cross. The second goal veered from its intended trajectory when a Pirate defender attempted to clear a precariously positioned ball out of harms way. The third goal clipped the underside of the crossbar and took a flukish angle into the net.

The Pirates had their share of opportunities with Mike Mercer, Andrew Hanson and Mack Moderie combining for a baker’s dozen cracks at the keeper, while Robin Erickson along with Danny DiGiallonardo each caught a brief glimpse through a window that closed before the cracks in the door could be exploited. Polson (6-5) bids farewell to a half dozen seniors in Mercer, DiGiallonardo, Emilio Hernandez, Sam Moll
