We have five of our six starters all play different positions and whatever works as a team, they are willing to do. Maybe that wasn’t what we originally planned but they are doing (what we ask).”

Evenson said she felt her team has come a long way but still has a long way to go in a competitive conference and divisional.

“I’ve been kind of reassigning our team and finding the best position for the team,” Evenson said. “We did pretty well with all of these changes and I think it was a good change overall.”

Scarlets finish third in Shootout

The Arlee High School volleyball team finished third in the Mineral County Shootout Saturday at Alberton/Superior.

According to Lonnie Morin, her Scarlets were able to get a good glimpse of some of the teams they may face in the playoffs.

“The teams from the east are pretty tough and for some reason, the teams from the west always struggle to make it to state,” Morin said. “To have a team from the West (make it to state) is not common. Hopefully this year, one of our teams will get there. Valley Christian looks very tough and all of the teams (at the tournament) look really tough.”

The Scarlets played up to Morin’s standards this week dishing out a cumulative total of 51 aces in the match.

“We played out of our minds this weekend,” Morin said.

Right now, Morin said her goal is to get out of a difficult Divisional.

“We have tough teams like Plains and Charlo,” Morin said. “Divisional is always tough but hopefully we can rise to the occasion.”

To add depth to her team, Morin called up sophomore setter Sydni Rogers.

“Rogers will be a backup setter and we will start seeing her play in games a little bit,” Morin said. “We run a 6-2 offense and I like to push my sub limit a lot when we run different offenses.”

At the Mineral County Shootout in Pool Play, they defeated St. Regis 15-10, 15-9 and 15-5. They defeated Two Eagle 15-0, 15-7, and 15-2. They defeated Seeley 15-14, 14-15, and 15-14, and then defeated Valley 15-7, 12-15, 15-9.

In the championship bracket, they lost to Valley Christian 14-25 and 23-25.

Bryndle Goyins and Carly Hergett led the team with two aces. Hergett had seven of the team’s 16 kills. Mikayla Rieken finished with five of the team’s 27 digs, and Tomi Brazill had six of the team’s 13 assists.

The Scarlets then defeated Victor 25-11, 25-20 to capture third place. They were led by Hergett with six aces, Hergett had six of the team’s 12 kills, Brazill had six assists, Rieken had 20 digs, and Goyins had four blocks.

“Valley and Victor are both scrappy teams and we didn’t get a lot of readily big hitting because our team was tired,” Morin said. “We were all getting down and (in a tournament like this) you just start running on pure guts. Our kids played their hearts out and it was fun.”

The Scarlet’s also fell to Plains on Tuesday at Arlee High School 20-25, 18-25, 25-23, and 21-25.

Ashley Tanner led the team with five aces, Goyins had eight kills, Brazill had 13 assists, and Rieken had 14 of the team’s 52 digs.
