Lady Pirates golf gets ready for season
The Polson Lady Pirates’ team will be young and is still looking to fill out its roster from a team that finished fifth in the 2016 state competition.
The three returners from last year’s state-placing team are: sophomore Cali Cannon, Esme Yarbrough and Amanda Farley.
“(The three returners) are all getting better and working hard at their game,” coach William Owen said.
Owen said he is still looking for golfers to fill out a team and hopes to field some more golfers before the start of the season.
“I am looking for improvement from them and I am just hoping I can fill out a team this year,” Owen said.
Cali Cannon, the team’s highest finisher from last season, will enter her sophomore season and Owen stated he is “optimistic” about her potential.
Last season, though Cannon didn’t medal, she finished in the top-25 in the state.
“(Cali) has a lot of promise,” Owen said. “This summer, she signed up to play golf in the Missoula league and that should be a bonus for her game with her playing there last summer.”
Cannon will be joined by teammate Amanda Farley this season, a golfer that Owen said shown “significant improvement” since last season.
“She had a really good state tournament (last season),” Owen said. “She didn’t place but she certainly has improved in the previous season.”
Another golfer looking to improve from last season is Esme Yarbrough. Last season as a freshman, Yarbrough showed “steady improvement” and has the potential to be a state placer, Owen said.
Lady Pirates still looking for golfers
Bill Owen said he is still looking to add golfers to his team.
Parents who have kids involved in fall athletics will attend a mandatory meeting for parents and athletes next Monday at 7 p.m. at the Polson High School auditorium. Right after the meeting, the boys and girls golf team will have another meeting and interested players can still sign up for golf, Owen said. “The packet will explain our philosophy and expectations we have for the kids and the parents.”
