Gerald Francis Raunig

| December 14, 2017 4:00 AM

Gerald Francis Raunig passed away November 30, 2017. Jerry lived a full life and enjoyed the outdoors when camping, boating or fishing. He had an ear for music, played trumpet in the band, sang in the church choir, listened to recorded music, enjoyed live concerts and had a talent for whistling a tune. Throughout his life, Jerry had a solid work ethic, a strong commitment to his family, and a love of laughter.

Jerry was born August 22, 1935, to Frank and Kathryn Raunig of Great Falls, Montana. He received his education in the Great Falls Catholic school system. He continued his education at St. John’s University in Minnesota before he transferred to the College of Great Falls, then to University of Montana where Jerry earned his degree in Pharmacy in 1958. It was at College of Great Falls where he met the love of his life, Helen Pilcher. They wed in 1956 and raised four children. Time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren was his greatest pleasure.

He began his career in sales for E.R. Squibb & Sons in Eugene, OR, then co-owned Smith Drug Store in Missoula from 1966-73. In 1973, Jerry and his family moved to Helena where he served as the Executive Director of the Montana Automobile Dealers Association until 1985. He then pursued a career in sales for management training organizations in the Seattle, WA area. Work was pure enjoyment for him, providing experiences, adventures, and opportunity to travel. After three distinct careers, Jerry retired in 1999 and moved back to Big Sky Country, Polson, in 2001. When he was not out playing golf, he was on his back porch kibbitzing with golfers as they passed the Raunig home on the 8th green.

He gave back to his community through volunteering, collected Western art, and played cards—he was the life-long, family champion in cribbage—these were just a few of the ways he loved spending his free time. He was a master story-teller, had a keen sense of humor, and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of 61 years, his children, Linda Raunig (Patti Hagemeyer), Lisa Solberg (John), Mike Raunig (Sheila) and Susan Raunig (Gregory Roeben); his four grandchildren, Dan Raunig (Mary), Nicole Solberg, Maria Raunig and Jeffrey Solberg; and one great granddaughter, Reagan Raunig. Jerry is also survived by sisters Joyce Hanson, Marjorie Raunig, Judith Raunig-Graham, and Patricia Raunig.

A memorial service celebrating Jerry’s life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s name to EvergreenHealth Hospice Care, 12040 NE 128th St., Kirkland, WA 98034.
