Pirates score big at Tri-State Invite Invitational

Every year the Polson Pirates send the core of their varsity wrestling lineup to the Tri-State Invitational Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to help them prepare for the Class A state tournament.

Pirates coach Bob Owen said he always uses the Tri-State Tournament as a gauge to find out where his team is at and how they will do in their respective state tournament.

This season, the Pirates finished 17th in the Tri-State meet. According to Owen, this was two places lower than how the 2016-2017 squad finished in the Tri-State Tournament last season.

Since the beginning of the season Owen has declared that Parker Adler, who transitioned from the 138-pound weight class to the 152-pound weight class, is the guy to beat in the Class A, 152-pound weight class. At the Tri-State Invite, Adler continued to prove him right.

Adler, who qualified to the semifinals, struggled against some of the better wrestlers from other states that had won state titles but still retained his title as the favorite in the state of Montana.

“I think at 152, Adler is the guy to beat at our level in the state,” Owen said. “He ran into some really good competition and had to face some state champions out of state but in our state, he is the guy to beat.”

Owen said he felt the competition was really great practice for the core of his lineup.

“With competition like this, it is going to really help them and we are on target (for the state meet),” Owen said.

Other wrestlers Owen said performed well at Tri-State included Mateo Quinones, who finished fourth at the 120-126-pound weight class, Bridger Wenzel finished fourth at the 132 to 138-pound weight class and Cameron Brown finished seventh at the 138-145 pound weight class.

“I really thought our group at Tri-State did really well,” Owen said. “We didn’t have Hunter Fritsch in the lineup and had we had him, we probably would have been closer finishing in the top ten. Our front-line wrestlers competed really well.”

Owen said he felt a couple of his wrestlers that didn’t place wrestled really well at the tournament.

“Noah Humphrey was able to go 2-0 over there in that tournament and that is a really positive sign for us,” Owen said. “We need to balance our lineup and can’t depend on those top six or seven scoring enough points to win the trophy.”

JV wrestlers shine in Eureka

Since last season, Owen has boasted on his team’s promise at the junior varsity level, who competed Saturday at Eureka High School.

“We are taking baby steps and we are getting them there,” Owen said. “They are willing to do the work in the weight room and if the kids are willing to do the work, they are going to progress. They have great technicians such as Kevin, Brett and Matt and they are going to progress.”

Owen said he felt Jasper Drake, at the 205-pound weight class, performed well despite losing in the finals to Logan Kaminsky in the finals.

Kaleb Unger, who is in the145-152 pound weight class, placed fourth in the tournament. Aaron Hanson, who is in the160-170 pound weight class, finished third.

Polson also had a first-place finish at the 160-170 pound division with the performance of Garrett Croft.

Working with both the junior varsity and the varsity during the break, Owen said he hopes to take advantage of helping his team refine their technique.

“This is the most important time of year because we will be able to learn,” Owen said. “We don’t have any competition and it gives us a chance. I can bring someone else like my son Pat that might show up and help a little bit. That will allow them to really progress as far as getting better in our technique.”

Last year, the Pirates didn’t get a chance to work on technique as much because they were ravaged by injuries.

“What happened (last year) with those injuries just plagued us through January and we experienced another nightmare with three or four of our best wrestlers,” Owen said. “A couple of our kids are banged up but they aren’t as serious as last year.”
