Tips for safe travel during the holiday season

As Christmas and New Years approach, the American Automobile Association is anticipating heightened road travel.

More than 107 million Americans are estimated to travel between Saturday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Jan. 1, according to a press release from AAA.

Sharing tips for safe travel, Sgt. Chan Berry stressed for motorists to be aware of weather conditions.

“If anyone’s driving a distance, keep your eyes on the weather forecast,” he started.

“Be prepared to get stuck somewhere,” whether due to snow or other unfavorable weather and traffic events, he said.

Another safety tip he suggested is to drive slowly.

“Do not follow other cars too closely. Keep a distance,” he said, adding that drivers should also be mindful of slower traffic on two-lane highways.

Headed into New Year’s, Chan said the obvious, “don’t drink and drive.”

Should a person find themselves in a situation where they are unable to find a designated driver, they should walk if it’s feasible or stay put.

“Nobody wants to be in jail” on the holidays because they drive impaired, he said.

There are programs offered locally to ensure that people get to their places safely.

Jenny Wright, secretary and a driver for Draggin’ Wagon in the Mission Valley, said that locally on Christmas Eve through Christmas Day morning, the Tipsy Tow Program through AAA will be offered.

“Any motorist can call for a free tow and ride home” up to 10 miles, this holiday season, Wright said.

That toll-free AAA number is 1-800-222-4357 (1-800-AAA-HELP).

“It’s designed to keep intoxicated people off the roadways,” she explained, adding that the tow is “only good for AAA tow drivers.”

Services will not be provided to motorists requesting a tow to another drinking establishment, repair facility or any other location other than their home (or a hotel if motorist is or plans on becoming a guest).

Other services not included in the Tipsy Tow program are requests to start a vehicle, flat tire changes, gas delivery, “taxi” service and requests to transport more than two people with the vehicle.

Mileage beyond 10 miles will be the responsibility of the motorist. It’s suggested that drivers quote any excess mileage charges and obtain agreement for payment prior to providing the tow.
