Maidens hope to remain perfect

Ronan High School girls basketball coach Ron Hanson said his Maiden’s team is looking to improve in the second half of the season in spite of its undefeated record in the first half of the season.

“On the offensive side, we’ve done really nice things and I think we have averaged up to 50 or 60 points on offense,” Maidens’ coach Ron Hanson said. “We still haven’t really shot the basketball well said. We chose to control the tempo of the games and rebounded pretty well. The biggest thing we have to work on defensively is we tend to get sloppy and not follow our assignments.”

At the end of the first half of the season, the Maidens finished with a perfect 7-0 record. Hanson said he has high hopes for the second half of the season and said he felt there is a lot of potential for his team as they prepare to move into the playoffs.

“If we really work, rebound and play defense well, I think this is going to give us a good chance to make it state and not only make it state but also be playing on Saturday for first, second, third, or fourth place,” Hanson said. “We have that much potential and it’s up to us to reach that potential and achieve what everyone else thinks we are capable of doing.”

Hanson said the second half of the season will include some critical games that will get them prepared for Districts and Divisionals.

“We have some tough games coming up in the second half of our schedule the next two weeks,” Hanson said. “If we do well against Deer Lodge, Anaconda, Florence, and Loyola, that will set us up the rest of the season.”

During the break the Maidens put an emphasis on their offense and defense.

“To be really honest, we went back to basics,” Hanson said. “We worked on a lot of movements, made some adjustments, and tweaked some of our plays that we’ve been doing. Teams have been watching film on us. Against teams you play twice, you have to come up with some different things and new plays. We’ve had a pretty good week of practice and are looking forward to getting back on the floor.”

Hanson credited the coaches in his conference for making things difficult for the Maidens.

“The second half is huge and we have some really good coaches in our conference,” Hanson said. “They always make really good adjustments. It’s kind of a chess match and our adjustments just have to be better than theirs.”
