Pirates wrestlers plagued by injuries headed into second half

The Polson Pirates wrestling team has had three key injuries to key players that has Coach Bob Owen concerned as postseason rapidly approaches.

During the Bozeman Invitational, 160-pounder Fritsch turned his ankle. RJ Pierre, the Pirates 103-pounder, dislocated his elbow and Cameron Brown is recovering from perineal-nerve damage sustained from accidentally shooting himself in the left leg.

Owen said he isn’t optimistic about his team hosting Thursday night’s dual against Columbia Falls until they get key pieces healthy.

“Columbia Falls is good and we will have a hard time winning dual meets until we get these kids healthy,” Owen said. “We have looked better each match and we need to not worry about the team score. I think our success is going to be totally dependent on getting healthy. If we can get those three back in the lineup, I feel fairly strongly about our chances of being in the top three at the end of the year but I don’t know where we are with those three.”

Polson’s Bridger Wenzel has pinned his way into today’s semifinal round of the Tom LeProwse Invitational wrestling tournament. The 132-pounder stuck Clay Fischer of Butte Central in 2:24 in the first round Friday and Jan Sanchez of Cody in the quarterfinals in 1:54.

Polson’s Parker Adler at 132, Hunter Fritsch at 160 and Noah Humphrey at 182 lost in the quarterfinals.

Wenzel, the Pirate’s 126-pound wrestler, finished fourth as the team’s highest placer at the Invite. Parker Adler finished fifth in the 138-pound division and Humphrey finished sixth in the 182-pound weight class.

Brown is eyeing a comeback after his wrestling career was in jeopardy after accidentally shooting himself in the left leg. According to Owen, he has made progress

“Brown has been cleared to start drilling in wrestling in two weeks,” Owen said. “I am hopeful that he returns. We are depending on our trainer to get us back into position and we can contend for trophies in the divisional and state,” Owen said. “We did get good news on Brown who has been cleared to start drilling in wrestling. Hopefully we get him back for the last two dauls. He received a second opinion from a doctor in Missoula and said he didn’t feel like he severed any nerves. He got a brace for his ankle and cleared him to start to drill in the practice room.”
