The Arlee High School girls basketball team was able to hold off a late third-quarter charge by its cross-county conference rival Charlo to a 36-24 conference victory Saturday night at Charlo High School.

The Scarlet defense was able to shut down the Lady Vikes’ offense in the fourth quarter and holding them to no points after Kaitlyn Cox scored seven consecutive Charlo points in the third quarter to keep them in the basketball game.

Scarlet’s Coach Bill Stockton said his team just cranked up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter.

“The fourth quarter was huge and we held them scoreless,” Stockton said. “Carly Hergett was also 8-of-9 from the free throw line (in the fourth quarter) and that made a huge difference.”

Stockton said the Charlo-Arlee conference game is “always intense.”

“Anytime we play them it’s pretty close and we expected it to be a close game going in,” Stockton said. “The fact that we hadn’t played them this season made us pretty excited about the way that we played in the fourth quarter. We were able to finish out the game with our defensive intensity.”

Stockton said the Scarlets modified their strategy in the second half.

“Early in the game we keyed on Cheyenne Nagy and tried to deny and extend the zone to wherever Nagy was,” Stockton said. “We just ran a little more zone and we had the top of our zone with Noelle West. She just did a great job extending the perimeter past the 3-point line. With shooters like what Charlo has, you want to extend it past the three-point line and locate the shooters at all times.”

Stockton said the Lady Vikes’ grit made it a difficult match up for his team.

“Charlo’s team are hustlers, they got every rebound and I was a little upset at our intensity on offense,” Stockton said. “We got out-rebounded on the offensive end and that isn’t normal for us.”

Against the Lady Vikings, Stockton said he felt his team kept its composure.

“I felt like we did a great job keeping our composure and our defense was outstanding,” Stockton said. “There are no stats on paper for how Noelle West played but it’s those little things and giving it 100-percent.”

The Scarlets also played St. Ignatius Thursday in St. Ignatius and won a hard-fought rivalry game 67-32.
