M-A-C wraps up season with third-place finish at state
FRENCHTOWN — The Mission-Charlo-Arlee softball team entered the state Class B-C Tournament with an unenviable task Thursday afternoon at Frenchtown High School.
The Lady Bulldogs entered the Class B-C state tournament with a No. 4 seed after they lost the Western Divisional Consolation to Loyola 3-0. The Bulldogs knew they were going to have their work cut out for them in a stockpiled tournament.
Undaunted, the Lady Bulldogs climbed their way to a third-place finish after a 5-2 loss to Libby Saturday morning at Frenchtown High School.
M-A-C’s first opponent to open the tournament was the No. 1 seeded Glasgow team.
The Lady Bulldogs weren’t afraid of the task and responded by scoring four runs over the heavy favorite No. 1 seeded Lady Scotties.
M-A-C was propelled by homers by Frankie Smith and Kenzie Couture. Smith and Couture combined for a total of six RBIs in the closely-contested game in where no lead was safe.
The Lady Bulldogs outhit the Lady Scotties 12-to-6 in the game.
With what many called the “upset’ of the early portion of the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs struggled to get key hits against the top-rated Florence team. Florence scored three runs in the top of the fourth and the Lady Bulldogs answered with two of their own but were unable to manufacture enough runs against Florence to make a difference.
Couture was 1-for-2, Smith was 1-for-3, Charlo was 1-for-3, and Vanessa Kent was 1-of-3, accounting for their only hits of the game in the loss.
M-A-C responded to entering the loser’s bracket of the tournament with a 10-1 victory against Loyola out of the gate.
The Lady Bulldogs got contributions from several players in its lineup including Azia Rain Umphrey, who was 2-for-4, Charlo hit 2-of-5 and Summer DarAngelo batted 2-for-5.
DarcAngelo had a double and Couture finished with a home run. Charlo and Umphrey both had two RBIs. Couture, Kent, and Sierra Hutchins each finished with an RBI in the winning effort.
The Lady Bulldogs were rewarded for their effort with a rematch versus Glasgow. The high-scoring match up again produced a total of 13 runs and M-A-C ended up on top with a 7-6 victory over Glasgow in extra innings
Umphrey was 2-for-5, Charlo was 2-for-4, and Smith was 2-for-5.
Charlo, DarcAngelo, and Smith all contributed in this victory with doubles. Charlo had three RBIs and DarcAngelo had two RBIs. Umphrey and Olson finished with one RBI each. Olson’s single up the middle scored Kent from second, who beat the throw to home to advance in the tournament.
After defeating Glasgow, the Lady Bulldogs were once again rewarded with playing Libby. M-A-C was 1-2 against Libby and they fell short after jumping out to a 2-0 lead, eventually losing 5-2 after Libby was able to score in the top of the fifth and sixth.
Umphrey and Olson ended up with RBIs in the loss.
Florence-Carlton was the eventual champion and they defeated Libby 9-3 in Saturday’s championship game at Frenchtown.
The Lady Bulldogs ended their season with a 22-6-1 record.
