Tribes announce support for U.S. Supreme Court nominee

| March 3, 2017 4:10 PM

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are pleased to see that President Trump has nominated a judge who understands Indian law and the needs of Indian Country.

CSKT has joined other tribes and tribal leaders across the country in sharing our strong desire that the United States Senate confirm Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

CSKT thanks Senator Daines for his leadership role in Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation. We appreciate Sen. Daines making this a priority for his work in the Senate. This is just one more example of Sen. Daines working for Montanans.

And CSKT thanks Sen. Jon Tester for his diligence in the confirmation process, meeting with Judge Gorsuch within a few days of his nomination. We know that Sen. Tester is considering our views and those of all Montanans as he performs his role to advise and consent on judicial nominees.

Judge Gorsuch is a distinguished jurist from the West with a reputation for fairly applying the law on issues important to us in the western United States.

Sen. Daines’ activism in support of Judge Gorsuch will put a westerner and a highly-regarded Indian law scholar on the highest court in our land.

As Indian Country Media Network noted, “Gorsuch is seen by Indian law experts as more informed on tribal law than were many of Trump’s other potential nominees.”

Judge Gorsuch’s record demonstrates respect for tribal sovereignty and understanding of the unique issues facing Indian Country.

The Supreme Court will benefit from the perspective of another Westerner on the Court. We thank Sen. Daines for his support, and we call on both of our senators to work together to move Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation swiftly.
