Grapplers cap another season of Little Guy Wrestling

Every year Polson Little Guy Wrestling Coach Bob Owen hopes to instill several fundamental life lessons in his participants while building up interest in his Polson wrestling high school program at the same time.

This year Owen and several other valley coaches including Mission-Charlo’s Lyle Cronk and Ronan’s Happy Cheff culminated what Owen referred to as “another successful season” of Little Guy Wrestling this Friday and Saturday at Columbia Falls High School.

The Polson Little Guy wrestling program placed a total of 16 kids that finished in the top four in the Western Montana Little Guy program.

Because the Little Guy wrestling program doesn’t divide groups based on classification by size, Owen said it makes it difficult to compete against schools with larger populations.

“It is very hard to beat teams like Kalispell with their numbers, both in individual and team competitions,” Owens admits. “For schools that are our size, we are right there competing with other teams.”

Owen, who has been coaching Little Guy for nearly forty seasons, said the success Polson had ranks right up there.

“I would say in terms of how we did, this has to rank right up there,” Owen said of his team’s overall performance. “We’ve had several but this has just been an overall good tournament.”

Owen said the success in the Little Guy program isn’t always a gauge in the future of the Pirates program but it can still be a good barometer of the future of Polson’s wrestling program.

“The key is to always retain the kids and keeping them going,” Owen said. “A bunch of kids that have had success at this level continue to develop more in the high school level.”

Owen said he is “optimistic” about several 8th graders that may be a part of Polson wrestling next season.

“If we can keep the 8th graders that we have and keep them going, they will really add to our high school program next year,” Owen said.
