Throughout the entire Polson Lady Pirates cross country season there were two runners’ times that remained the lowest times: Bea Frissell’s and Naima Crowl.

Frissell captured what the junior had worked for since she was a freshman and now she gets the distinction of being crowned the Montana High School Athletic Association state champion after Saturday Class A race in Helena.

Pirates, Lady Pirates cross country coach Matt Seeley watched Frissell’s final mile time of six minutes flat help propel her to the state championship crown and her team to a third place finish.

“Bea’s final mile was exactly the unbeatable six minutes that she had prepared for and she convincingly earned the state title that has been her goal since her freshman track season,” Seeley said. “Bea’s victory was the culmination of dedicated training.”

All season Naima Crowl, a talented Lady Pirates runner in her own right, had been in the shadow of Frissell’s accomplishments. Crowl used the big stage to showcase her own talents and medaled herself with a third place finish in the state. Last season, Crowl finished 21st in the state.

“It was a glorious finale to her Pirate cross country career,” Seeley said.

Molly Sitter, another key component to the Lady Pirates’ nucleus, also captured All-State honors finishing 14th.

The Lady Pirates’ magic didn’t stop there.

“Nina managed to throw aside what has been a frustrating freshman season and rise to a new level on the big stage,” Seeley said. “She moved to the lead of Polson’s second wave and finished in 39th place.”

Gwen Seeley also put forth a huge effort to finish 44th and wrap up the Polson scoring.

“They stuck to the plan and showed great composure,” Seeley said. “They held back during a very fast start and then it was time to move. Bea and Naima rolled through the field like a purple wave and Molly (Sitter) wasn’t far behind.”

Pirates cross country captures sixth

The Polson Pirates cross country team finished sixth as a team at the Class A state championship run Saturday in Helena.

The boys fell only one point shy of overhauling powerhouse Hardin for a fifth-place finish.

Pirates’ coach Matt Seeley said his team’s run was “satisfying” as they catapulted their way to state.

“It was very satisfying to watch so many great runs after all the hard work this year,” Seeley said. “As far as I know, this is the highest state finish by a Pirate boys team since they finished fourth in 2004.

Quin Stewart led the way with a breakthrough performance, mowing down the field in the second half of the race to take 7th place and to earn All-State honors.

“No Pirate boy runner has achieved All-State since Logan Torgison finished 2nd in 2007,” Seeley said.

Jonah DuCharme had one of his top-caliber races and finished 26. Mason Sloan was the second fastest freshman in Class A. Andrew Reed again wowed the spectators with his ferocious finishing kick and Zach Evertz finished his season finale tough to round out the scoring for the Pirates during the race.
