Fryberger and Lady Vikings continue to flourish
Charlo High School girls’ freshman runner Carlee Fryberger has made herself a standout on a team stockpiled with top-tier Class C Montana High School Athletic Association talent.
The Lady Vikings are so loaded with talent, it is difficult for anyone to stand out, much less a freshman, but the freshman has become a statistical double take that simply can’t be ignored.
In Charlo’s last two meets, Fryberger has made a declarative statement that she may be in the conversation to capture some state hardware.
At the Sapphire Twilight Invitational, Fryberger’s lowest finish was third in the triple jump, where she levitated to a distance of 33 feet, 8 inches.
The rest of Fryberger’s finishes were in the top two places at the Sapphire Twilight Invitational Thursday at the Corvallis Community Events Center.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Fryberger captured first recording a time of 15.91 seconds and she placed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.55 seconds, a personal record the freshman is sure to eclipse by the time her next three years as a Lady Viking have concluded.
Speaking of some of Fryberger’s talented teammates, Fryberger is a member of a stacked relay team that has the necessary ingredients to capture state gold. Fryberger, who was paired with teammates Kaitlin Cox, Bella Hawk and Tyrah Hammond, collectively placed first in the 4X100 relay recording a time of 52.03 seconds.
During another event, Fryberger also teamed up with Liev Smith, Destiny Manual and Hammond to run the 4X400 with similar results. Together they captured first place at the Dave Tripp Memorial recording a time of 4 minutes, 30.78 seconds.
Fryberger has become a known commodity, but the freshman showcased her potential this year by capturing first place in the 100-meter dash Saturday afternoon at the Seeley Swan High School meeet at Big Sky in Missoula. Fryberger recorded a time of 13.01 seconds, a personal record, and Fryberger’s time showcased her potential. Her first-place accomplishment was also magnified because she beat out 44 other contestants. Fryberger’s performance made her one of the perennial contenders to compete for state hardware.
Her closest competitor was Jordan Nelson of Big Fork, who ran 13.32 seconds.
Fryberger also PRed in the 200-meter dash recording a time of 26.95 second and finishing second in an event that had 28 contestants at Big Sky. She finished second to her relay teammate Tyrah Hammond, who also set a personal record with a time of 26.87 seconds, numbers that bode well for Charlo’s prospects moving towards May.
Hammond, a Lady Viking junior, is just as decorated of an athlete as her younger teammate.
Hammond PRed with a time of 13.09 seconds in the 100-meter dash at Sapphire and also finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.87 seconds.
Thus far this season, Hammond has scored a total of eight first place finishes and five individual first place finishes. Two of them came at Sapphire, and one team event in the 4X100 relay with Kaitlin Cox, Liev Smith and Fryberger with a time of 52.03 seconds.
The rest of the Lady Vikings also are capable of grabbing headlines with their talented roster.
At Sapphire, Kira McPhail PRed in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 1 minute, 5.44 seconds. Kaitlin Cox finished in the 100-meter dash with a time of 17.75 seconds and fifth in the high jump, clearing a distance of 4 feet, 6 inches. Liev Smith also tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing a distance of 7 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.
Cox finished second in the triple jump clearing a distance of 33 feet, 10 inches, a personal record. Fryberger finished right behind Cox with a distance of 33 feet, 8 inches.
Vikings finish strong at Sapphire, Seeley
Charlo High School distance runner Wills Degrandpre established himself as one of the top-caliber runners in MHSA Class C with his performance at Big Sky Saturday in Missoula.
Degrandpre won the 3,200-meter run recording a time of 10 minutes, 50.85 seconds and he placed second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 46.10 seconds. Seeley-Swan distance runner Logan Maughan captured first place recording a time of 4 minutes, 45.53 seconds to win at Big Sky.
