FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Aubrey Bureau of Boise, Idaho, swam the 2.5-mile distance from The Narrows to Slacks Point on Flathead Lake nonstop on July 22. (Photos provided)

On the evening of Sunday, July 22, Aubrey Bureau told her dad and mom that she wanted to swim from The Narrows to Slacks Point at Flathead Lake. Her dad Joe informed her it was approximately 4.5 miles across. Undaunted, she was adamant that she could do it. Her parents, Joe and Tara Bureau, told her to set her alarm and the family would meet her down at the boat the next morning at 7 a.m.

As her family cheered her on from the boat, she arrived at Slacks Point in two hours. Non-stop swimming! She was greeted on the shore by other family members and friends. Her Uncle Larry Donovan said, “I grew up on this lake and I have never heard of such a thing at her age!” Her dad Joe simply said, “She is tough!”

This is not the first time Aubrey swam the Flathead. When she was 11 years old, she swam in the Polson Bay Water Daze 1-Mile Swim from the KwaTaqNuk to the Golf Course. She came in third overall. Ella, her sister, came in sixth overall. Aubrey, her sister Ella and brother Jack all swim competitively for the Boise Y Swim Team.

Aubrey is the granddaughter of Barbara Donovan Jacobson and Steve Robbins of Polson.

The Bureaus, who live in Boise, Idaho, have been vacationing in Polson and recreating on the Flathead for the last 19 years. Over the years they have brought many of their friends with them to show them the beauty of Montana.
