Mail diverted due to Big Arm post office fire
The Big Arm post office is closed following a late-night fire in which the Montana State Fire Marshal was called to investigate.
At 11:02 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, Polson Rural Fire District was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 28541 5th Street, according to Chief Gordon Geiser.
There were no injuries and the chief estimates about $40,000 in damages.
The fire was contained at the origin of the fire. No structural damage was observed, but Geiser said there is smoke damage inside the building, which is approximately 1,200 square feet.
Geiser said that mail is currently being diverted to the Elmo post office, at 26288 Missoula Ave.
According to a press release from the United States Postal Service, customers may pick up post office box mail with a valid form of identification at the Elmo post office.
The Big Arm post office serves 250 customers and has 100 post office boxes. That location also conducts mail delivery, retail service and post office box distribution.
Calls to the United States Postal Service and the Montana State Fire Marshal’s Office were not immediately returned.
