Pirates wrestling has strong showing in Lewistown Duals
Polson Pirate wrestling coach Bob Owen is careful not to look too much into the results for the Class A Lewistown Duals as an accurate barometer of future results of the upcoming Class A state wrestling tournament in Billings on Feb. 9-10.
Owen has experienced the business long enough to know at Class A state, in Billings, anything can and will happen.
Owen would rather focus on the day-to-day and tournament-by-tournament improvement of his team rather than looking ahead to advance in the turbulent sport of wrestling.
He has three weeks to do just that.
“Duals aren’t always a great indication of what is going to happen at tournament time,” Owen said. “I feel the latest Class A wrestling power poll is pretty accurate and I also feel Havre is still the team to beat even though Sidney beat them at Lewistown. I still think Havre is the team to beat.”
Owen, who has a core set of wrestlers that are capable of helping his team compete for medals in the Class A state wrestling tournament, said he was “encouraged” by his team finishing with a 5-2 record in the duals.
“We had a couple of real positive things happen during this tournament,” Owen said. “Mason Cobb also beat the fifth-ranked kid in the state from Butte Central in his second match and that was a real positive thing to come out of the tournament. We wrestled really tight. We wrestled a heck of a match and were in contention for a medal. Cobb has a lot of ability and just lacked a little bit of confidence. He is just tough, competitive and is working hard at what he is trained in. That has really helped him.”
Owen said he felt all the Pirates’ wrestlers contributed to the success at the duals including Cameron Brown, Parker Adler, and a now healthy Hunter Fritsch.
Both Fritsch and Adler went undefeated and finished a combined 14-0 in the matches. According to Owen, Adler retained his position as the wrestler to beat in his class at the 152-pound weight division and Fritsch is beginning to return to last year’s form, prior to his injury, that made him nearly unbeatable in his class.
“Hunter had a good tournament and every match he wrestled, he pinned every opponent,” Owen said. “The match up we were looking for was his match up with the Lewistown kid. He was beaten in the match before he and Hunter could face each other. The kid got hurt in his match and we didn’t get to see him. I was hoping we would get that match up.”
For the second-consecutive dual with Ronan, Cameron Brown was able to get the winning pin over Ronan wrestler Eric Dolence.
“This was just another outstanding weekend for Cameron and I think he beat the third-ranked kid from Glendive and that really bumped Cameron up,” Owen said. “The kid from Frenchtown barely nipped Cameron and it was really a fantastic match. Cameron is just mentally tough.”
Owen knows the Class A Divisional Tournament on Feb. 2-3 for Columbia Falls is only weeks away and he said he anticipates the tournament will be tough. Also, at this juncture of the season, his Pirates won’t be able to get in a lot of practice time.
“On our side of the state, our divisional tournament will be tougher than it was because of the late 2016 reclassification,” Owen said. “With Libby and Ronan, they have two or three kids right there from Class B-C and Ronan does too.”
The Pirates didn’t win the Lewistown Duals but Owen said he felt his team had a very solid weekend as they move towards the stretch portion of their season.
“We had a really successful weekend and I was really glad we got to see Sidney and some eastern schools prior to state,” Owen said.
Editor’s Note: Spencer Stagg was not pinned as initially reported on our statistics at the Rocky Mountain Classic Jan. 18 Lake County Leader agate.

Asterisk (*): there can be up to 4 overtime periods (sv, tb1, tb2, utb), only the first and last can end in a decision. Standard application of the acronym ‘tb’ for the second and third 30 second overtime periods can only end in a pin with time designation. Since this lacks that criteria, it could refer to the first overtime period, hence 3-1 sv for sudden victory, or the last overtime period, hence 3-1 utb for ultimate tie breaker.
