‘Happy Campers’ for kids

Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) and Flathead Lake State Park at Wayfarers invite you to the summer kids’ series “Happy Campers.” This outdoor skills series is for children ages 8 through 14. Kids will learn practical outdoor skills all while having fun and being outside. These one-hour programs are $4 per child or $10 per family. Meet at the Harry Horn Picnic Shelter in the Harry Horn Day Use Area at Wayfarers at 11 a.m. Participants need not attend all programs.

Titles of the Happy Campers events the remainder of July and in August: July 12, Leave No Trace; and July 26, Careful Camping; Aug. 2, Maps, Compasses and Hiking; and Aug. 9, Happy Campers.

Free evening programs

Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) invite you to join a ranger and explore what makes Flathead Lake so unique. Program topics vary; check Flathead Lake State Park’s Facebook page or contact the Flathead Lake Ranger Station at (406) 837-3041 in the week leading up to a program for specific topics. Bring a camp chair or blanket to enjoy these 45-minute evening programs. All programs start at 7 p.m. and are free for registered campers; otherwise, $4 per person or $10 per family.

Here is a breakdown of event locations and dates the remainder of the summer:

Big Arm Unit ­— July 14, Aug. 11 and Aug. 25. Finley Point Unit — July 7, Aug. 18 and Aug. 31. Wayfarers Unit — July 6, July 21, Aug 3 and Sept. 1. West Shore Unit — July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 17.

Guided hikes

Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) and Flathead Lake State Park invite you get out and enjoy the outdoors with a park guide. Guided Hike topics will have a different focus each month. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a water bottle and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Hikes are one to two miles in length. Guided hikes, held through September, will meet at 10:30 a.m. Hikes at the Wayfarers Unit will meet at the Flathead Lake Ranger Station; West Shore Unit hikes will start at the Boat Trailer Parking Area; and Big Arm Unit hikes will start at the Park Entrance Station. Guided hikes are $4 per person or $10 per family.

Topics include Flora of Flathead Lake, July 7 at Big Arm; Fauna of Flathead Lake, July 14 and Aug. 11 at Wayfarers, July 28 at West Shore, and Aug. 4 at Big Arm; and A Walk Through Time, Aug. 18 at Wayfarers, Aug. 25 at West Shore and Sept. 1 at Big Arm.

Little Park Explorers Series

Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) and Flathead Lake State Park at Wayfarers invite you to bring your family, get outside and learn about the great outdoors at their “Little Park Explorer” summer series. These one-hour programs in July and August are designed for children ages 4 through 7. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. eet at the Harry Horn Picnic Shelter in the Harry Horn Day Use Area at Wayfarers. Programs are $4 per child or $10 per family. Participants need not attend all programs.

Topics include Goodnight Owl, July 11; Who Pooped in the Park?, July 18; Nature Journaling, Aug. 1; and Wild Water, Aug. 8.

Flathead Lake State Park consists of six unique park units located around Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. The park units on the east side are Wayfarers, Yellow Bay and Finley Point, and the west side units are West Shore, Big Arm and Wild Horse Island. In addition to boating, swimming and fishing, each park unit offers unique experiences including camping, rental picnic shelters, group camping, hiking, sightseeing, picnicking, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
